MANHATTAN, Kan. - Arica Nassar had a team-leading 12 kills, including the last one in a set-four comeback as the Oregon State volleyball team defeated UC Irvine, 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22), Saturday at Ahearn Fieldhouse.
Oregon State is now scheduled to complete play at the Varney Invitational at 5:30 p.m. PT against host Kansas State.
The Beavers found themselves down six points in the fourth set, 21-15, but rallied with six consecutive points to tie the score at 21. The teams traded points to remain tied at 22, but the Beavers finished off the match with three straight points, punctuated by Nassar's hard kill down the middle.
Oregon State improved to 2-0 on the young season with the win while the Anteaters dropped to 0-2.
"UCI got tentative at the end and that's a great example, as well tell our team, that when you're in the driver's seat, as they were, you can't just hope that something happens on the other side," head coach Taras Liskevych said. "They got tentative and we had a few good blocks. It was a match where we were never really in rhythm. We didn't have our best match and we found a way to pull it all together."
Both Camille Saxton and Laura Schaudt had 10 kills in the win. For Schaudt, it was a career-high, surpassing her six against California last season.
The teams were relatively equal on the stat sheet: OSU hit .200 to UC Irvine's .179. Each team also recorded four service aces.
However, the one category that was not equal was in blocks. The Beavers tallied 16 as a team to just six for the Anteaters. Ashley Eneliko, who had nine kills, posted eight blocks and was followed closely by Nassar and Allie Rogers, who had six apiece.
The Beavers held off a late UC Irvine rally in set one, winning 25-22. OSU found itself up by as much as six, 12-6, but the Anteaters used a four-point run to inch closer and managed to tie the score at 21 and later, 22.
Liskevych's squad, however, claimed the last three points of the set for the three-point win. Nassar posted four of the team's 12 kills in set one as OSU hit .234 to .170 for UC Irvine. Marisa Bubica had a big set for the Anteaters with six kills.
Irvine took set two, 25-20, after hitting a robust .375 to a .259 clip for the Beavers. Bubica again led UC Irvine in kills, posting eight, while Camille Saxton and Laura Schaudt paced the Beavers with three apiece.
The Beavers held an early 6-5 lead in the set but UC Irvine went ahead for good at 8-7, and led by as much as eight, 19-11. OSU pulled to within four late, at 24-20, but the Anteaters were able to hold off the comeback for the set victory.
Oregon State went up 2-1 in the match with a 25-19 set-three win. Very similar to set two, the teams were tied at 7 but unlike earlier action, the Beavers managed to gain the lead and control. OSU's biggest lead of the set was six - the final score of the set.
OSU hit .244 in the set to .114 for the Anteaters, who saw Bubica held off the board completely in eight attempts. Schaudt and Nassar, meanwhile, led the Beavers in kills with four apiece.
Aly Squires led UC Irvine with 16 kills while Bubica finished with 14, failing to be credited with one over the final two sets.
