CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 19th-ranked Oregon State baseball team had the tying run on third but could not get it on the board in a 5-4 loss to fifth-ranked Arizona Saturday at Goss Stadium.
The Beavers, down two to begin the bottom of the ninth, saw John Tommasini walk to open the inning and move to third when Max Gordon doubled off the right field wall, just missing his first career home run.
Tyler Smith, who finished the game with three hits, drove in Tommasini with a sacrifice fly to center. He, however, watched as Arizona reliever Matthew Troupe got Michael Conforto swinging and Dylan Davis on a 5-3 ground out to end the game.
Troupe picked up the save, his fourth of the season, while Stephen Manthei, who opened the ninth as Arizona's reliever, got the win to improve to 4-2 this season.
The loss went to Cole Brocker, who allowed back-to-back home runs to Bobby Brown and Riley Moore, respectively, and fell to 0-3 this season.
Smith and Gordon each drove in runs in the third as the Beavers picked up a 2-0 lead. Arizona scored one in the fifth and was matched by the Beavers in the bottom half of the inning when Smith drove in his second of three runs on the day.
The Wildcats (17-7 overall, 3-2 Pac-12) scored solo runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game at three.
Dan Child started for the Beavers (15-6, 4-1) and allowed seven hits and two runs with five strikeouts in six innings. He did not get the decision.
Nor did Arizona starter Konner Wade, who scattered seven hits and three runs in 7 2/3 innings.
Smith led the Beavers with three hits, which was followed by two off the bat of Gordon.
Brown, Moore, Joey Rickard and Brandon Dixon all had two hits in the win.
