Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader At California

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Oregon State baseball team opened Pac-12 Conference play in a big way Saturday, sweeping California at Evans Diamond. The Beavers took game one, 9-2, then downed the Golden Bears 4-1 in game two.
OSU goes for the sweep Sunday at noon.
The Beavers started the day with the 9-2 win, highlighted by Tyler Smith's three-hit effort as Oregon State finished with 14 hits off Cal starter Justin Jones and three relievers.
Smith drove in two as did John Tommasini, who singled home two to give the Beavers a 7-2 lead in the seventh.
Jake Rodriguez, Max Gordon and Michael Conforto all had two hits in game one. Every Oregon State starter recorded at least one hit.
Ben Wetzler started for Oregon State (13-5 overall, 2-0 Pac-12) and worked eight innings, allowing six hits and two runs to improve to 4-0 this season. He walked two and struck out four for his 10th career victory.
The teams traded runs through the first two innings before OSU went up for good with two in the fourth. Smith and Conforto both drove in runs in the fourth while Rodriguez singled home another in the fifth for the 5-2 advantage.
Justin Jones took the loss for Cal (11-6, 0-2) in game one, dropping to 2-2 on the year after allowing seven hits and five runs.
Game two was much more of a pitcher's dual, with Dan Child highlighting the afternoon. He worked eight full innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run with six strikeouts.
Child, in his third quality start of the year, threw 111 pitches, with 71 for strikes. He improved to 2-1 on the year.
Matt Flemer, meanwhile started for California and dropped to 2-2 this year.. He worked seven innings and allowed just three runs.
Oregon State tallied just four hits but made them count. Ryan Dunn extended his hit streak to 12 games with a solo home run in the fourth off Flemer.
The Beavers added a solo run in the ninth on a fielder's choice.
Oregon State took an early 2-0 lead in the first. Max Gordon scored first on a steal attempt at third and came around to the plate on an overthrow. Dylan Davis, the next batter, drove in Smith on a sac fly to center for the 2-0 advantage.
Tony Bryant picked up a strikeout in a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.

OSU Notes: The game one win snapped a three-game losing streak for OSU in Berkeley, getting swept in 2010 ... The Beavers' won their fourth league opener in the last five years ... The lone blip was an 18-0 loss to Arizona in 2011.
