CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team scored eight runs over its last two turns at bat to upend No. 22 Oklahoma, 11-7, in the finale of the Nike College Showcase Sunday at Goss Stadium.
The comeback win was spurred on by freshmen Michael Conforto and Dylan Davis and junior Tyler Smith, who all had three hits. Conforto and Davis each hit home runs and the latter tallied two doubles and five RBI - two on an eighth-inning home run.
Ryan Dunn also hit a home run for the Beavers to cap off a three-run eighth inning that gave the club cushion after taking the 8-7 lead in the seventh. That occurred when Danny Hayes reached on a fielding error by Oklahoma first baseman Max White. Two runs scored on the play in what turned out to be the game winner.
Oklahoma took a 7-0 lead after two - five came in the second inning, with every one coming unearned and charged to reliever Scott Schultz.
The Beavers started the comeback in the fourth, scoring two. Conforto hit a solo shot down the left field line and Ryan Barnes drove in one on a groundout.
OSU (11-5 overall) added one in the fifth when Davis doubled for the first time, driving in Smith.
Davis' double chased Oklahoma (11-5) starter Damien Magnifico, who finished with six hits and three runs allowed in 4 2/3 innings. Kindle Ladd came on in relief of Magnifico and eventually took the loss after allowing all five runs in the seventh inning.
The Beavers sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh. Max Gordon doubled, followed by a single from Smith and back-to-back doubles by Conforto and Davis, with the final one driving in two and bringing the Beavers to within one, 7-6.
Four batters later, Hayes reached on the fielding error and Oregon State took the lead for good.
Tony Bryant picked up his first two-out save of the season, scattering just one hit with two strikeouts.
Riley Wilkerson was the recipient of the five-run seventh. He picked up the win to get to 1-0 this season after allowing one hit, three walks and one strikeout in two innings.
Garrett Carey led Oklahoma with three hits.
Oregon State jumps into Pac-12 Conference play starting Friday when the Beavers visit California in Berkeley, Calif. First pitch for that game is slated for 2:30 p.m.
Game two is set for Saturday is 1 p.m. while Sunday's start has been moved to 12 p.m. to accommodate the Beavers' travel schedule.
