CORVALLIS, Ore. - Dan Child picked up his first career win to pace the Oregon State baseball team to a doubleheader split with Illinois and Connecticut in the second day of the Nike College Showcase Saturday at Goss Stadium.
Child and the Beavers (11-5 overall) defeated Illinois, 8-2, before dropping a 6-3 decision to UConn (6-7) in the second game.
Child led the Beavers to a game one, 8-2 victory over Illinois by scattering one run and five hits over 8 1/3 innings for his first career win. He struck out nine and walked one in the win.
Child did not allow an extra-base hit and Illinois' (6-6) lone run came in the third with the Beavers already up 6-0.
The Beavers took the game after scoring six runs in the second. Oregon State managed just three hits through the first two innings but walked four times and was hit by a pitch three times by Illinois starter Matt Milroy, who took the loss to drop to 0-2 this season.
Dylan Davis drove in three with a double, while Ryan Barnes hit a two-run single to highlight the inning, which saw the Beavers send 10 batters to the plate.
The Beavers, already up 6-1, added to the lead with two more in the sixth when Michael Conforto hit a two-run single through the right side of the infield. They were the second and third runs of the game driven in by Conforto who drove in his first when getting hit by a pitch in the second inning.
UConn's LJ Mazzilli provided the game-winning runs with a two-run home run in the seventh inning to pace the Huskies to the comeback win.
The home run came off Oregon State reliever Cole Brocker, who dropped to 0-2 on the year.
The Beavers held a 3-1 lead after four innings, but the Huskies chipped away at the lead, culminating in Mazzilli's home run. UConn added a solo run in the eighth for cushion.
Conforto led the Beavers with two hits and two RBI. He was matched by Tyler Smith, who also had two hits.
The win went to UConn's David Fischer, who improved to 1-2 after allowing three hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Oregon State concludes the Nike College Showcase Sunday at 11 a.m. PT against Oklahoma at Goss Stadium.
