Laramie, Wyo. – Senior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) led all hitters, reaching double-digits with 12 kills in Oregon State volleyball's season opening sweep over the DePaul Blue Demons (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) on Friday morning in the first match of the UniWyo Wyoming Invite.
“I thought it was a good start for the 2011 season,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “I thought we did three things well as a team – attacking, passing and serving. Our team goal is to hit above .300; that's what we need to do to be really good. I thought Megan [McBride] did a great job running the offense, and everyone on the court did a good job. It was good we came out early to a great start here in Wyoming.”
Freshman Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) posted a .467 hitting percentage, finding the floor nine times on 15 attempts, while junior Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) also tallied nine kills.
The Beavers held the Blue Demons to only sideout points through most of the first set, while Oregon State built its lead to as many as eight at the 24-16 mark, going on a 6-1 run to close the first set behind the serving of sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) and Saxton. Saxton paced the Beavers with four kills, while junior Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) and Shaw added three.
Saxton continued on her tough serving spree, leading the Beavers on a 6-0 to open the second set after DePaul started things off with a kill to earn its first point. But Oregon State never let the Blue Demons back within less than four points through the rest of the set, as the Beavers cruised to 2-0 advantage heading into the long break.
Defoe opened up the third set, serving the Beavers to a quick 5-0 lead and earning the team's seventh service ace of the match. She led the team through another long stint with two more service aces to reset her career-high two, adding a team-high 11 digs.
McBride chalked up her first double-double of the season with 22 assists and 10 digs, while three different Beavers earned a block each.
In their first matches, freshman Corinna Mommert (Paderborn, Germany) killed six balls on 12 attempts, adding a service ace, redshirt freshman Tayla Woods (Corvallis, Ore.) counted six assists, while redshirt freshman Allie Rogers (Eugene, Ore.) earned a kill.
