CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sam Gaviglio struck out 11 and scattered five hits and a run in a complete-game effort as the Oregon State baseball team advanced to the Corvallis Regional final with a 5-1 win over Creighton Saturday in front a season-high 3,103 fans at Goss Stadium.
The Beavers will play the winner game of the regional's fifth game, featuring Georgia and Creighton. That game starts at 1 p.m. with Oregon State slated to play at 6 p.m.
Gaviglio pushed his season record to 12-2 with his fourth complete game of the season. He struck out 11 - his fifth time at 10 or more strikeouts - and limited the Blue Jays to just five hits. His only blemish was a solo home run given up to Mike Gerber in the fifth inning.
That pushed Oregon State's (40-17) lead to 2-1, but the Beavers answered with three runs over the last four innings - one in the sixth and two in the ninth in which Garrett Nash homered and Andrew Susac doubled in a run.
Ty Blach took the loss for Creighton (45-15) after allowing seven hits and three runs over six innings. He dropped to 10-3 this season.
Nash, Carter Bell and Brian Stamps all finished with two hits as the club won its 10th consecutive postseason game at Goss Stadium. The Beavers also tallied their 40th win of the season, joining the 2005, 2006 and 2007 clubs as teams in school history that have reached the 40-win plateau.
Nick Judkins was the lone Creighton player with two hits.
The Beavers will be in their first regional final since 2007, when OSU defeated Virginia twice in Charlottesville, Va., to earn a trip to the NCAA Super Regionals against Michigan as the club vaulted to its second consecutive national title.
Pat Casey won his 32nd postseason game as Oregon State's head coach.
