Oregon State Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Pat Casey
Opening Statement
"Well it's always good to win and especially against a very good club. Sammie (Sam Gaviglio) set the tone. He was just outstanding. He's been that way all year long. We expected for it to be a low-scoring game and I thought we did a great job of putting some balls in play early, create some momentum and some energy and we made some good plays. Ryan Dunn played well at short. Parker (Berberet) made some great plays at first base. It was just kind of a solid effort. I thought that we kind of had a couple of innings there where we didn't pick up a run and you don't want that to happen. But the guys stayed with it. So overall I thought we played real well. At this time of year, you're just trying to win."
On the position of the Beavers being 2-0 in the regional...
"I would say that our club has done a great job, I think, of just trying to play one game at a time. And not getting too far ahead and not looking back. They make windshields 50 times bigger than rearview mirrors. We talked about that and looking forward. Obviously, we struggled down the stretch and that was frustrating to us, frustrating to me probably more than anybody because you feel that responsibility. I just think that our guys have battled all year long. They've done some things that nobody thought they could do. I don't think that's changed. I just think that's great.
The atmosphere at the ballpark is just electric so it's kind of fun. I think our guys are having a good time with that and they feel a lot better about where they are at. Baseball is a tough game. The ball bounces one way or the other way and it can cost you a game. It's the player's time of the year. We've been practicing all year long and it's their time of the year. As difficult as it is to win baseball games, you have to turn it over to them and ask them to executive. Certainly I think it's their responsibility for how they show up to the yard, with what kind of attitude they show up with."
On whether he thought about taking Sam out of the game...
"I thought about it. It was a tough situation when you're in a tournament and we used both Matty (Matt Boyd) and Tony (Bryant) last night. Sammie was doing it with ease. I talked to Sammie after the eighth and he wanted to go out. In those number of pitches, there were a lot of purpose pitches. We intentionally walked a guy, we pitched around a guy and I didn't think he was laboring at all and he's always been honest with me."
Pitcher Sam Gaviglio
On how he felt with an extra day of rest...
"I felt great. I thought Andrew (Susac) did a great job behind the plate and (Nate) Yeskie did an excellent job of calling the game. I just wanted to get the infield the ball and they played great defense behind me."
On whether he felt like he threw 136 pitches...
"No I don't. I felt great going into the last inning. I wanted to finish the game."
On getting out of a jam in the seventh inning...
"I just needed to attack and make good pitches. I knew once I got ahead I would be a lot better off."
Leftfielder Garrett Nash
On hitting a homerun in the second straight game...
"I'm just trying to stay in the same routine. I'm feeling really good. I've been working hard and trying to get ready for each game. It definitely feels good. I'm just seeing it good and swinging."
On getting his swing back after missing time...
"Not too long. I just kind of eased back into it. I took a little bit of time and it came back just like it was before and it feels good now."
First Baseman Parker Berberet
On working on the pitcher covering first base on balls hit to him...
"Yeah, every day in practice. We worked on it a lot and got all of the confusion out of the way so it shouldn't be a problem down the road."
On what helped the team relax today...
"I think that big inning we had yesterday definitely got our mind at ease. That okay, we are good hitters and things are starting to fall so we used that momentum that we brought in today and scored two in the first two innings and it was huge."
Creighton Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Ed Servais
Opening Statement
"Well Oregon State did a very good at taking advantage of some of our mistakes. We made a few mistakes there early in the game and they took advantage of it; mistakes that we normally do not make. So credit goes to them and also their pitcher who did an outstanding job, especially when we got runners on base and in scoring position he made some of his best pitches. So you have to give him a lot of credit."
On the pitching of Ty Blach...
"I thought he got off to a little bit of a slow start and I'm sure Ty would agree. He got better and he gave us a chance though. It looked rocky there to begin with. They scored a run in the first inning. We made an error in the first play that was put in play, which was again very uncharacteristic of us. But he weathered the storm. We felt Oregon State would come out and feed off the crowd, which they did. We weathered the storm enough that it was only 2-0 for the middle part of the game. We were just having an awful time generating some offense. We put so much pressure on our pitching and defense. We have to score more runs."
On generating offense in the short turnaround...
"That's a good question, because we've been talking about that for a long time. Especially with guys in scoring position. To me the game was decided when the score was 3-1 and we had guys on second and third with one out and he throws the first two pitches to our hitter, which were strikes, which were up and away, which were balls that we probably should have put in play. If nothing else, to hit a groundball to second base and at least score a run. If you get that game 3-2, the whole personality of that game...potentially they have to go to the bullpen and things like that. When he strikes out the next guy and gets out of that inning with no runs it's a huge momentum to Oregon State and they took advantage of it. We have to somehow put the ball in play there and score a run."
On bouncing back tomorrow...
"This team has really prided itself on having short memories and coming back from these tough defeats. I would be very, very surprised if we don't play well tomorrow. It would be uncharacteristic of us not to do that. We're not interested in feeling sorry for ourselves. Georgia is not going to feel sorry for us tomorrow. We have to pick ourselves up. It's a new day; it's another opportunity. We are not done yet. I expect our seniors to really pick it up tomorrow, knowing this is it now. Whoever really wants to play the most in that 1:00 game will probably advance."
First Baseman Nick Judkins
On comparing Gaviglio to other pitchers he has faced...
"I thought he was a really good pitcher. He had control with all three of his pitches and basically put them wherever he wants. We've seen guys like that and we've had success but tonight was just his night and we weren't aggressive enough at the plate."
On Gaviglio's pitches...
"I thought we chased his slider a little bit too much tonight. He was keeping it down in the zone and we were just kind of waving over it a little bit. I'm a lefty so I saw it a little bit better, but I think the righties definitely had a hard time picking it up. He was definitely working in and out and everywhere he wanted to. He had his stuff tonight and hopefully tomorrow is a better day for us."
Pitcher Ty Blach
On his pitching performance...
"They took advantage of a lot of my mistakes. I was leaving a lot of balls up in the zone and wasn't executing my off speed early on and they were hitting me around a little bit. To their credit they took advantage of every mistake we made and that really hurt us tonight."
On the pass ball that led to an early run for Oregon State...
"I just didn't hit my spot on the pitch and it kind of cut on me a little bit. It was a tough play for Scott (Thornburg)."
Centerfielder Mike Gerber
On the homerun he hit...
"I was just trying to be aggressive. He threw me a fast ball on the first pitch. I talked to Anthony Bemboom right before that and he had pitched him kind of the same way so he gave me that little tip and it ended up working out for us. Overall, we just need to be more aggressive at the plate. We kind of got behind counts when we really didn't need to be."
On Gaviglio's pitches...
"He was able to throw all of his pitches for strikes when he needed to. For the most part, he had most of his stuff down. When he got ahead of most hitters, he was able to get us to chase in the dirt."
