CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ryan Dunn drove in two in Oregon State's four-run seventh and Sam Gaviglio threw his third complete game of the season as the 19th-ranked Beavers opened a three-game series with a 5-3 win over No. 5 Arizona State in front of a season-best 2,547 fans at Goss Stadium Friday night.
Dunn keyed the Beavers' four-run seventh that erased a 2-1 deficit. He drove in Jared Norris from second and Kavin Keyes from first with a blooper down the left field line that evaded the diving efforts of ASU left fielder Johnny Ruettiger.
The double opened the offensive floodgates for the Beavers, with each of the four runs coming with two out. After Dunn's double, Tyler Smith blooped a single to left, and two batters later, and after a Michael Miller singled, Ryan Barnes singled through the left side to give OSU (22-7 overall, 3-1 Pacific-10 Conference) a three-run advantage.
"Offensively, we came through at the end when it mattered the most," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "Ryan was a great catalyst for us in the seventh and we held on for a big win against a very good opponent in Arizona State."
Gaviglio scattered two runs in the first and five hits through the first two innings but settled down to complete the game for his sixth victory of the season, and seventh quality start in eight appearances. He allowed nine hits and three runs while striking out six. He walked one.
Gaviglio allowed RBI singles to Joey DeMichele and Matt Newman in the first to give the Sun Devils an early 2-0 advantage. He allowed only three singles, however, until the eighth, at one time retiring 11 straight Sun Devils.
Arizona State (22-7, 5-2) scored its final run in the eighth when Zach Wilson hit a deep fly to left for a sacrifice fly.
Four different Beavers had two hits in the win as OSU tallied 10 on the night off three ASU pitchers. Dunn was tied offensively by Keyes, Norris and Smith.
Smith's first hit, coming in the fifth, was blooped to center, driving in Dunn, who had doubled with one out. For Dunn, the doubles marked the first two of his career.
Brady Rodgers started and took the loss for Arizona State, dropping to 4-2 this season. He allowed nine hits and all five Oregon State runs while striking out nine. He did not issue a walk.
Ruettiger, Newman and Zach MacPhee all had two hits to pace the Sun Devils.
The win extended Oregon State's win streak to four games.
