Six-Run Fifth Propels No. 3 Baseball To Comeback Victory

LOS ANGELES - The third-ranked Oregon State baseball team utilized a six-run fifth inning to overcome a four-run deficit in a 7-5 series-opening victory over No. 24 UCLA Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The game was expected to be a pitcher's duel with two of the Pacific-10 Conference's pitchers on the mound in Oregon State's Sam Gaviglio and UCLA's Gerrit Cole. That, however, did not turn out to be the case as the teams combined for 12 runs and 19 hits.
"This is another great comeback win for us," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "I'm especially proud of the way this team battled back and stayed hungry. UCLA is a very good club."
The Beavers (31-8 overall, 11-2 Pac-10) found themselves down 5-1 after UCLA put three runs on the board in the fifth. But OSU loaded the bases on Cole and made it 5-4 when Carter Bell tripled to the gap in right-center.
Ryan Dunn tied the game, 5-5, when he blooped a single to center, then scored what amounted to the game-winning run when Ryan Barnes hit a sac fly to center.
Tyler Smith made it 7-5 when he scored on a balk by UCLA reliever Mitchell Beacom after he attempted to throw out Garrett Nash, who was attempting an early steal of second base.
Gaviglio and the Beavers held on over the last five innings, holding the Bruins scoreless over that stretch. Matt Boyd allowed just two hits while striking out two in two innings of relief work. Tony Bryant came on in relief of Boyd after a single opened the ninth and picked up the last three outs for his seventh save of the season.
Bell and Dunn led the Beavers' offensive attack with two hits apiece, as OSU saw nine different players tally at least one hit.
UCLA finished with eight hits; Beau Amaral, who scored the game's first run on a sac fly after a first-inning triple, led the Bruins with three. Dean Espy also had two hits for UCLA, which dropped to 22-15 overall and 10-6 in Pac-10 play this season.
Neither starting pitcher was particularly effective. UCLA's Cole was knocked out during the Beavers' six-run fifth, allowing 10 hits and seven runs while walking three and striking out five. He threw 110 pitches in his 11th start of the season.
Gaviglio worked six full innings, scattering five runs - four earned - along with six hits and a career-high seven walks. He did not strike out a batter and threw 110 pitches, but did keep the Bruins scoreless over his last two innings and left the game with the two-run advantage.
Gaviglio improved to 8-1 this season while Cole dropped to 4-5.
Down 1-0, the Beavers rallied to tie on a double by Jared Norris in the third. UCLA, however, scored the next four runs to set up Oregon State's come-from-behind victory.
Oregon State and UCLA continue the series Saturday with a 2 p.m. PT first pitch at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

OREGON STATE NOTES: The game marked the 53rd all-time meeting between the teams and 39th with Pat Casey as Oregon State's head coach ... The game marked the 11th this season for the Beavers against a top-25 team ... The Beavers' six-run fifth is tied for the second-most in a single-inning by OSU this season ... OSU scored eight on Hartford in the sixth on March 5 ... It also scored six in the eighth against the Hawks in the second game that day, six in the second on March 11 against New Mexico State and six in the fourth against VMI on March 12 ... Friday's game lasted 3:15 and was the team's first longer than three hours since March 27 against UC Santa Barbara, a stretch of 15 games.
