Baseball Pounds Out 10 Runs, Evens Series With Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - Ryan Barnes and Ryan Dunn each hit their first career home runs and the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team overcame a three-run deficit to defeat No. 18 Arizona, 10-4, Saturday afternoon at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium.

The win ties the series at one game apiece with the clubs scheduled to end the three-game weekend Sunday at 12 p.m. PT.

"I'm very proud of the way this team battled back today after going through adversity on Friday night," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We started off slow but all that matters is how you finish and we came through with a win today. The key will be tomorrow's game as we aim for the series win. We will be focused and so will they."

Carter Bell and Kavin Keyes drew consecutive walks to start the fifth, then watched as two flyouts kept them at first and second. Barnes, who came into the game with two extra-base hits on the season, got Arizona starter Kyle Simon to a 3-1 count.

With the next pitch, and the club trailing 3-0, he and the Beavers (19-7 overall, 1-1 Pacific-10 Conference) made it a whole new ballgame. He narrowly cleared the left-center field fence - just over the 375-foot sign - for his first career home run, scoring Bell and Keyes to tie the game at three.

An inning later, Dunn gave the Beavers their first lead of the series with a liner down the left-field line that snuck over the fence at the 360-foot sign next to the foul pole. The three-run home run, coming on a 1-2 pitch from reliever Bryce Bandilla, scored Bell and Tyler Smith and constituted Dunn's first career extra-base hit.

Josh Osich went a career-long seven innings on Saturday. He threw 99 pitches and allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out one and walking one. He improved to 4-0 this season with his first career quality start.

Osich was relieved by Tony Bryant in the eighth. Bryant came on and allowed a run in the eighth but was perfect in the ninth for his third save of the season.

Simon dropped to 5-2 this season after getting the loss. He allowed seven hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Arizona pulled to within two, 6-4, after its run off Bryant in the eighth, but the Beavers gave themselves some cushion in the ninth. Andrew Susac singled through the left side with the bases loaded to give the Beavers an 8-4 lead. Then, with the bases loaded again, Brian Stamps hit the top of the left-center fence for a two-run double and the final six-run advantage.

Dunn ended the game with a team-leading and career-best three hits. He and Barnes tied for the team with three RBI apiece.

Overall, the Beavers pelted 12 hits off five Arizona relievers. Danny Hayes tallied two on the day.

Arizona finished the game with 11 hits. Robert Refsnyder tallied three while Jett Bandy and Alex Mejia had two apiece.

Arizona (20-8, 2-3) opened the game's scoring with an RBI single by Bandy, then pushed its lead to 3-0 after three. Refsnyder singled in the first run of the inning for the Wildcats, then saw Seth Mejias-Brean drive in his 13th run of the season on a groundout to second.

That 3-0 lead lasted another inning-and-a-half, until the fifth, when Barnes' three-run home run tied the score. An inning later, and the Beavers had their first lead of the series after the club's second three-run home run of the game

Oregon State and Arizona conclude their three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. PT. The Beavers are looking to win two straight series at Arizona for the first time in school history.

OREGON STATE NOTES: Ryan Dunn and Ryan Barnes' home runs were the first of their careers ... For Barnes, it was his third extra-base hit of the season after tallying two doubles entering the game ... For Dunn, it marked his first career extra-base hit ... Barnes batted in the second spot of the order while Dunn was in the ninth spot ... The game marked the first since the opener at Long Beach State, March 18, in which the Beavers hit two home runs in the same game.
