Beavers Race Well, Fall Short Against Top 10 Crews
April 17, 2011 | Men's Rowing
The Oregon State men's rowing team raced several of the best crews in the country over the weekend at the Stanford Invitational.
On Saturday morning the No. 17 Beavers' Varsity 8 raced well but came up just short to No. 6 Stanford by three seconds. OSU's Junior Varsity 8 suffered a similar fate dropping to the Cardinal by two seconds. The Oregon State Freshman 8 reversed the team's fortunes with a 16-second victory in the final race of the morning. It would be the lone win for the Beavers during the weekend.
“All three lineups knew they were up against real tough competition this weekend,” head coach Steve Todd said. “Winning only one of nine races is a disappointment, but each boat had some internal goals for their races and those were met.”
In the afternoon, the Beavers' V8 rowed another strong piece but fell to No. 7 Wisconsin by five seconds. The F8 and JV8 each dropped their races by 10 seconds.
The tough racing continued on Sunday with V8 and JV8 each getting edged out by No. 2 California by six seconds. The F8 wrapped up the weekend's racing finishing 10 seconds behind the Bears.
“We have a lot of time now before Pac-10 Championships to look at options. Everything will be assessed; lineups, strategy and training. We simply have to get the boats to reach their peak performance for Pac-10s.”
The Beavers' next race is scheduled for May 7 at the Windermere Cup in Seattle.
