LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sam Gaviglio was "on" Friday night.
He was so good, Long Beach State could do nothing to get on base through the first seven innings at Blair Field. But alas, an inning-opening single by Mike Marjama ended that streak.
Nevertheless, that was Gaviglio's only blemish as the junior threw a one-hitter in Oregon State's 4-0 win over Long Beach State in the opening-game of a three-game series Friday night.
The right-hander struck out a career-best 14 to absolutely stymie the Dirtbags, picking up his fourth win of the season in the process. He did not issue a walk, struck out the side in the first and third innings and had one of the best outings in Oregon State history.
The complete game was the fourth of Gaviglio's career and second this season. He faced 28 batters, just one over the minimum.
With his shutout, his second of the season, Gaviglio extended his scoreless innings streak to 38 innings, inching closer to the NCAA record of 63 innings accomplished by George Plender of Vermont from 1954-55. Todd Helton holds the single-season record with 47 innings in 1994, and Gaviglio can break into the top four with five more, which would push him to 43 consecutive innings.
"Sam obviously did an outstanding job," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "He was very close to the perfect game and that speaks to how well he was throwing. Long Beach State is a gritty team, and they fight you in every at bat."
The Beavers No. 3 and 4 batters, Andrew Susac and Danny Hayes provided all the offense Gaviglio needed in the win. Susac hit the first pitch he saw in the first over the left-center fence, his fourth of the year, to give OSU a quick 1-0 lead.
That didn't last long, however, as Hayes followed that up with a home run down the left field line to give the Beavers a 2-0 advantage.
Two innings later, Hayes, who tallied three hits on the night, doubled to the left-center gap, driving in two more and giving OSU the four-run lead.
Brian Stamps also had two hits for the Beavers, who tallied nine hits. Susac had two hits for his 10th multiple-hit game of the season.
The win not only improved Oregon State to a 14-3 record this season but it also pushed the Beavers' win streak to 11 games, the longest in the Pacific-10 Conference this season and one shy of tying the team's record of 12 under head coach Pat Casey. That was set in 2007.
Andrew Gagnon took the loss for Long Beach State, dropping to 2-3 this season. He allowed four runs and six hits while walking four and striking out six.
Long Beach State dropped to 9-8 this season.
Oregon State and Long Beach State continue their three-game series Saturday at Blair Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. PT and game two will start approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
