LONG BEACH, Calif. - Danny Hayes drove in two with a double in a five-run Oregon State seventh as the Oregon State baseball downed Long Beach State, 9-6, in the first game Saturday at Blair Field.
The Beavers capitalized on four consecutive errors for Long Beach State in the seventh, pushing to what was then an 8-3 lead. Hayes tallied a two-run double down the right field line to break the 3-3 tie and Michael Miller followed that up a few batters later with a two-run single through the right side to get to the five-run lead.
Neither starter figured in the game one win. Ben Wetzler worked three full innings, allowing three hits, two runs and four walks before being relieved by James Nygren in the fourth. Wetzler was off the hook for the decision in the fifth when the Beavers scored three off Long Beach State starter Brendan Pinder.
Pinder got the hook after going 4 1/3 innings. He was touched for five hits and three runs while walking two and striking out door. He was officially off the hook for the loss when Long Beach State tied the game at three with a solo run in the bottom half of the fifth.
Long Beach State got out to a 2-0 lead after four innings, but the Beavers jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Miller scored the team's first run when Garrett Nash was walked and came home on a passed ball on the play. Andrew Susac extended his hit streak to 14 games with a single through the left side to tie it, 2-2. Dylan Jones gave the Beavers the 3-2 lead with a sac fly to right.
The Dirtbags tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom half of the fifth when Ino Patron singled up the middle off Nygren, which ended up as one of three runs allowed by the right-hander. Nygren improved to 3-0 this season after allowing four hits and three runs in three innings.
Tony Bryant, taking over for Matt Boyd in the ninth, got the final three outs of the game for his second save of the season. He got out of a bases loaded jam, with two strikeouts and a pop out, to seal the three-run win.
Kyle Friedrichs took the loss after allowing five runs - just one earned - in 2 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits and walked none while striking out two but dropped to 2-2 in 2011.
Hayes, Miller, Garrett Nash and Carter Bell all had two hits to pace the Beavers who tallied 10 in the first game. For Nash, it extended his hit streak to five games and for Hayes, those two hits helped pave the way for a team-leading three RBI.
The win extended Oregon State's win streak to 12 games, tying the program's best under head coach Pat Casey, previously accomplished in 2007.
