Sam Gaviglio Throws Two-Hit Shutout Against No. 14 UConn

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS - Oregon State junior right-hander Sam Gaviglio was masterful Friday afternoon at Whataburger Field in the opening game of the Kleberg Bank Classic. The Ashland, Ore., native allowed just two hits in the Beavers' 2-0 shutout of No. 14 Connecticut.

Gaviglio ended the game with 10 strikeouts, his second career time in double figures, and he allowed just two hits with one walk in his first win of the season.

The righty retired the first 12 batters he faced before allowing a single by first baseman Mike Nemeth to start the fifth inning. He also walked Doug Elliott during the inning, the only time two runners reached base in the same inning.

Gaviglio retired the side in the first, second, third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. He allowed a two-out single to John Andreoli in the ninth, but retired Nick Ahmed on a fielder's choice right after to end the game.

The junior finished the game having thrown 115 pitches and faced 29 batters, just two over the minimum.

"That was an outstanding start by Sam and a great way for us to start the weekend," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "UConn is an outstanding hitting team and he was able to control the plate. He is looking very good early on this season."

In two starts this season, Gaviglio has a 1-0 record and 0.00 earned run average in 15 2/3 innings. He has allowed eight hits and two runs - both unearned - while striking out 15 and walking just one. Opponents are hitting .143 against him.

The game turned out to be a pitcher's dual, with UConn's Elliott Glynn also throwing well. But the Beavers (3-2 overall) managed two runs in the third to saddle Glynn with his second loss of the season. He ended the game having thrown 7 1/3 innings, scattering three hits and two runs while striking out two and walking three.

All told, the teams combined for six hits - one apiece by four different Beavers.

Ryan Dunn, making his first career start at second, opened the third by drawing a 3-1 walk. He moved to second when Garrett Nash was hit by a pitch. The two then moved up when Glynn was charged with a balk.

Brian Stamps drove in the Beavers' first run of the inning, and what would turn out to be the game-winner, when he grounded out to second on a 2-2 pitch. That scored Dunn, and moved Nash to third, where he scored as the next batter, Luke Acosta, grounded out to short on a 1-0 pitch.

The loss dropped Connecticut to 1-3 this season; the Huskies play Indiana in the first game Saturday at Whataburger Field.

Oregon State continues its trip to the Kleberg Bank Classic Saturday at 4 p.m. PT (6 p.m. in Texas) against host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. OSU will send lefty Ben Wetzler (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against right-hander Brett Carnline (0-0, 4.15).
