CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS - Parker Berberet went 3-for-4 and hit Oregon State's first home run of the season but the Beavers' late comeback fell short in an 8-7 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night at Whataburger Field.
Down 8-6 entering the ninth, Oregon State scored a run to make it 8-7 when Andrew Susac singled up the middle, scoring Tyler Smith, who had walked to start the inning. But Islanders' reliever Michael Boyle was able to get Luke Acosta on a strikeout with runners on second and third to end the game.
The final out held off a late Oregon State rally that saw the Beavers score five runs over the final four innings to just one for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. However, the Islanders had jumped out to a 7-3 lead after four innings. All seven runs came off OSU starter Ben Wetzler, who dropped to 0-1 after allowing eight hits and seven runs while striking out one in three innings.
James Nygren threw the final five innings in relief for the Beavers, striking out five while scattering five hits and a run in his first appearance of the season.
Berberet's home run came in the seventh, leading off the inning for OSU, and pulled the score to within three, 7-4. It was the team's first of the year and highlighted his night, which saw him post a 3-for-4 effort. He ended the game with three runs driven in as he singled home runs in the first and eighth innings.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi starter Brett Carnline earned the win after scattering six hits and three runs over five innings. Boyle got the save after allowing two hits and a run over 1 2/3 innings; he did, however, strike out four.
Andrew Susac, Danny Hayes and Jake Rodriguez all posted two hits as OSU tallied a season-best 13. Susac also drove in three; he drove in one in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, another in the eighth with a double to left center and his final one with a single up the middle in the ninth.
The Islanders (6-1 overall) jumped out to a 7-2 lead after four innings. The Beavers (3-3) held a short lead, 1-0, when Berberet reached on an infield single. But the Islanders scored their next five runs, first on a run-scoring double by Trey Hernandez, and then a run-scoring single by Jacob Perales, in the first.
Hernandez paced the Islanders with a three-hit effort. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got two hits apiece by Matt Holland, Drew Vest, Sean Washington and Jeramie Merak.
Oregon State plays in the final game at the Kleberg Bank Classic - and the third of four in Texas - Sunday when the Beavers take on Indiana at 9 a.m. PT (11 a.m. Texas time) at Whataburger Field.
