Eugene, Ore. – Senior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) had a team-high 10 kills, but the Oregon State volleyball team (16-16, 8-14 Pac-12) fell in three (22-25, 16-25, 17-25) on Friday evening in Matthew Knight Arena to No. 13 Oregon (21-9, 14-8 Pac-12) to end its 2011 season.
“The key to this match, we just were a little tight in the first set and never got our rhythm going, particularly in passing fluidly and playing good defense,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “Oregon outdug us, and we had opportunities in the first set, but didn't capitalize on them. And then really go out of a side out game- a fluid side out game. We didn't terminate enough, and we certainly did not put them in trouble passing like we did the other night. We just lost the serve-pass battle.
Oregon played very well tonight particularly on defense, serve reception and controlling the tempo of the game. Lauren Plum was outstanding and Williams had a really good hitting match.”
Freshman Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) had seven kills, an ace and a block, while redshirt freshman Allie Rogers (Eugene, Ore.) showed her hometown she could block with a match-high six.
Defensively, sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) was the lone Beaver to reach double-digits for digs with 12, while junior Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) added the second-most blocks on the team with three to go with her three kills, 18 assists and seven digs.
“We had a great season,” Liskevych said. “Could have been better with a couple more wins, but it's something to build on in the future.”
The Ducks were led by Alaina Bergsma with a match-high 12 kills, while libero Haley Jacob had 18 digs.
Oregon State Notes – Oregon State ends its season as one of the best in recent years with the most overall wins since 2003 with 16; most conference wins since 2001 with eight.
