Oregon State vs. Hofstra
TicketCity Legends Classic Regional Round
November 16, 2011
Gil Coliseum
Corvallis, Ore.
Team Notes
Oregon State utilized the same starting lineup for the third consecutive game, with Ahmad Starks and Jared Cunningham at guard, Joe Burton and Devon Collier at forward and Angus Brandt at center.
The game was the Beavers' first against a team from the state of New York since a 69-67 victory over Siena at the BCA Classic in Raleigh, N.C. on Nov. 17, 2004. The last time Oregon State hosted a squad from New York at Gill Coliseum was on Jan. 27, 1971 when it defeated Long Island in overtime, 71-70.
Angus Brandt has earned the Beavers the game's first possession in each of their first three games, winning the tip each time.
Hofstra's three-point basket to open the contest was the first time Oregon State has trailed in a game all season.
Oregon State went on an 11-0 run to take a five-point lead after falling behind 6-0 to open the game. That effort was part of a larger 19-4 Beaver run that gave the team a 19-12 lead with 12:29 to go in the first half.
After three games, the Beavers have outscored their opponents by a combined 34-2 in fast break points. Oregon State held a 8-0 edge over Hofstra in that category in tonight's game.
The Beavers opened the second half on 12-4 run to stretch their lead to six over four minutes into the period.
Jared Cunningham's 35 points and Devon Collier's 25 was the first time since Jan. 22, 2009 that two Beavers scored 20 or more points in a single game. Roeland Schaftenaar (22) and Calvin Haynes (21) turned the trick that night in a 69-65 win over California.
Player Notes
Junior Jared Cunningham set a new career-high for points with 35, surpassing his previous mark of 24, which he achieved twice, most recently in the Pac-10 Tournament against Stanford on March 9, 2011. With 12 made field goals he also beat his previous high in that category set on March 10, 2011 against Arizona.
The 35 points makes Cunningham just the fourth Oregon State player since 2000 to score at least 30 in a game. Most recently, Roberto Nelson set the program's freshman record when he scored 34 in the regular season finale against Arizona State last year (March 5, 2011). It is the 110th time an Oregon State player has reached the 30-point plateau.
o Brian Jackson - 32 - Texas A&M CC - 1/4/2000
o Marcel Jones - 35 - No. Colorado - 11/24/2006
o Roberto Nelson - 34 - Arizona State - 3/5/2011
With 35 points, Cunningham has scored in double figures in five consecutive games dating back to last season, which marks the second-longest streak of his career. Cunningham reached double digits in points in nine consecutive games, from Dec. 4-Jan. 8 of the 2010-11 campaign.
Devon Collier set a new career high with 25 points. His previous best was 19 in a Pac-10 Tournament game against Stanford on March 9, 2011 (W, 69-67).
Joe Burton set a career high with 11 assists, besting his previous mark of seven in a 83-70 win over Charlotte on Nov. 24, 2010. The last Oregon State player to have at least 10 assists in a game was Lamar Hurd against Washington on Jan. 17, 2004. Hurd dished out 10 in a 103-99 overtime loss.
With 11 assists and 10 boards Burton notched his second career double-double. He had 13 points and 12 boards at UCLA on Feb. 25, 2010.
Ahmad Starks a new career high with four rebounds. He last achieved his previous high of three on Feb. 12, 2011 against UCLA.
