Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team (14-10, 6-8 Pac-12) cruised to sweep (25-12, 25-18, 25-15) of Utah (9-15, 4-11 Pac-12) on Saturday evening in front of a crowd of 1,241 for Spike Out Cancer.
“That was a good win for us, particularly in the context of several things,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “Utah beat Oregon yesterday, and we had a really good game plan offsetting their hitters and blocking them and serving the ball tough. So we really got them off guard and played well throughout the match.
And now, we're in a position to really control our own destiny, and I love that. And right now we're really in that pack in the conference standings of Oregon, Arizona and us. And we just need to push and keep grinding away next weekend and all of the weekends coming up.
Six Oregon State hitters combined for the team's 42 total kills. Junior Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) registered a match-high 13 kills, while senior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) reached double-digits with 11. Freshman Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) tallied six kills, while junior Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) and redshirt freshman Allie Rogers (Eugene, Ore.) had five each.
And junior Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) earned the team's other two kills, while adding 34 assists.
Defensively, sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) led everyone in the backcourt with 21 digs with Shaw earning a double-double with 14 digs. Rogers blocked a match-high four balls including teaming up with Eneliko for back-to-back blocks to close the match, who earned three.
Despite four tie scores and three lead changes through the match, the Beavers controlled the entire match, leading Utah in every statistical category. Oregon State tallied 42 kills to Utah's 23, while hitting .276 to the Utes' .049. And the Beavers outdug the Utes 56 to 40, adding eight aces to three.
Utah's Danielle Killpack led the Utes with eight kills, while Nikki Sim had 15 digs.
Oregon State heads to the desert next to face Arizona and Arizona State. The Beavers will take on the Wildcats first on Friday at 8:00 p.m. The match will be televised on FSN via tape delay.
Oregon State Notes – Senior Dre Shaw earned her second double-double of the weekend, eighth of the season and ninth career, with 11 kills and 14 digs; setting a new career-high for aces with two … Junior Alyssa O'Neil served a season-high three aces … Oregon State is now 7-3 all-time against Utah, winning the last seven straight … Six conference wins is the most by Oregon State since 2005.
