Corvallis, Ore. – Junior Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) tied her career-high for kills with 22 to boost the Oregon State volleyball team (13-10, 5-8 Pac-12) to a five-set win (27-25, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 15-9) over Colorado (5-16, 0-14 Pac-12) on Friday evening.
“It's a win, but it was an ugly win,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We had a really hard time sustaining good play on our side of the net for a long stretch of points. Camille [Saxton] did a really good job attacking, and Dre [Shaw] hit really well in the fifth set. It was a nice distribution of digging by everyone in the backcourt.”
Freshman Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) and senior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) backed up Saxton with 14 and 12 kills of their own.
Defensively, sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) led the backcourt with 18 digs, while Shaw added 17 and Saxton had 10. Junior Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) earned her eighth double-double of the season with 36 assists and 14 digs. Freshman Corinna Mommert (Paderborn, Germany) emerged as the leading blocker with six.
Colorado and Oregon State exchanged four lead changes and six tie scores before Oregon State knotted things up at 23 all on a Saxton's fifth kill. The Buffaloes pushed the match into extra points on back-to-back kills on Oregon State set points, but a final block by Nassar gave the Beavers the 1-0 lead.
The second set followed suit with nine tie scores and five lead changes. Behind the serving of Mommert, the Beavers finally jumped out to the eventual final lead, spurred by two more kills by Saxton. Colorado threatened, going on a short run of its own, but another Beaver block gave Oregon State the 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Colorado took the third and fourth sets to force the match into a final deciding fifth set. Colorado was held to eight of its nine points coming on sideouts, but a final ace by junior Martie Massey (Beaverton, Ore.) ended the match in favor of Oregon State.
Oregon State outblocked Colorado 14.0 to 10.5, while also scoring four aces to the Buffaloes two.
Colorado's Kerra Schroeder led the Buffaloes with a match-high tying 22 kills, while Megan Beckwith had a match-high 32 digs.
