HONOLULU, Haw. - Oregon State managed just two hits and fell to Hawai'i 10-1 in the Hawai'i First Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament on Wednesday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The Beavers (8-3 overall) got just a second-inning single by Paul Richie and a fourth-inning double by Shea McFeely as they lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.
The Beavers conclude the round-robin portion of the tournament on Thursday at 4 p.m. PST against Chicago State; the game can be heard on www.osubeavers.com. The tourney moves to bracket play on Friday and Saturday, with the pairings and times to be determined by Thursday's games.
On Wednesday, the Rainbows (11-7) took command with four runs in the third inning for a 7-1 lead. Oregon State reliever Jared Sanders gave up a walk and three straight singles to start the inning, the shortstop Tony Calderon booted a potential double-play grounder that made the last of the three runs unearned.
Junior lefthander Kyle Aselton, making his first start for OSU, couldn't get out of the first inning, giving up three runs on five walks and Nathan Thurber's two-out, two-run single up the middle.
The Beavers had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as UH righthander Steve Bryant gave up three walks and a hit batter with one out, with Shea McFeely drawing the bases loaded walk to force in the run. OSU couldn't add to that advantage, though, as Aaron Mathews grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Kevin Joslyn, who hadn't pitched in OSU's first nine games, made his second appearance in as many days and the junior lefthander allowed just two runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Sophomore righthander Kurt Steele followed with his first appearance of the season, giving up one run in 2 2/3 innings.
Richie extended his hitting streak to seven games for the Beavers, while Mathews' hitting streak ended at nine games and Jacoby Ellsbury's was snapped at eight games.
