Softball Splits A Pair Of Games At Paradise Classic On Friday

HONOLULU, HI - Oregon State's softball team split a pair of games at the Paradise Classic in Honolulu, HI late Friday night. The Beavers knocked off Saint Mary's College by a 5-3 margin, before dropping a 3-1 contest against host University of Hawai'i.
In the first game, SMC (0-4) jumped in front early, scoring all three of its runs in the opening inning behind three hits. OSU (6-2) rallied back as junior shortstop Kelly Petersen blasted her second home run of the tournament over the center field fence, cutting the Gaels advantage to 3-2.
Oregon State took the lead in the third inning by taking advantage of three walks and an illegal pitch that brought two runs across the plate.
Petersen finished the game with a perfect 2-for-2 clip from the plate and three RBI, while Adrienne Alo went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Freshman hurler Ta'Tyana McElroy picked up the complete game victory to improve to 2-0 on the season. After allowing three hits in the opening inning, McElroy settled in and gave up just two hits for the remainder of the contest, while striking out a season-best eight batters.
In the nightcap, Hawai'i earned its third consecutive victory against Oregon State by getting on the board in the first inning.
Rainbow Wahine first baseman Tyleen Tausaga blasted a two-run home run off of OSU starter Monica Hoffman. The runs were the first of the season given up by Hoffman over 28 innings of work.
The Beavers narrowed the gap in the second inning when Alana Mendoza reached on a one-out single to left field and came across the plate when Brianne McGowan's ground ball to third was thrown in the right center field gap.
OSU finished with six hits on the night, compared to just five for the Rainbow Wahine. Freshman third baseman Sherina Galvan led the Beavers with a 2-for-3 clip from the plate.
Oregon State continues action Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. PST contest against University of Tennessee followed by a game against University of Alabama-Birmingham.
