HONOLULU - Monica Hoffman and Brianne McGowan combined to throw 14 innings of scoreless ball as the Oregon State softball team shut out Tennessee and Alabama-Birmingham at the Paradise Classic on Saturday. The Beavers (8-2) beat the Volunteers 2-0 before shutting down the Blazers 3-0.
Hoffman threw a complete game against Tennessee, giving up five hits and striking out eight to improve to 5-1. She struck out five more in two innings of relief to earn the save against UAB after McGowan threw five innings with two hits and two strikeouts to pick up her first win as a Beaver.
"Monica pitched a great game against Tennessee. She was extremely consistent and really kept their offense from generating any big threats," coach Kirk Walker said. "Brianne got the start in the second game, and she threw very well."
The Beavers broke away from a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth against Tennessee, when Adrienne Alo hit a solo home run to left center field. Alana Mendoza's RBI double in the sixth gave OSU an insurance run. The Volunteers threatened in the seventh but left two runners on base to end the game.
Vanessa Iapala drove in all three of OSU's runs against UAB with a pair of home runs, hitting a solo shot to lead off the fourth and adding a two-run homer in the fifth.
"Vanessa swung the bat extremely well, but I was a little disappointed we didn't hit the ball better the entire day. Offensively, we were dragging a little bit and were unfocused," Walker said. "Overall, these were two really good wins for us, but we need to play a little better tomorrow if we want to win this tournament. Hopefully we'll come out more focused and efficient offensively."
The Paradise Classic wraps up with bracket play on Sunday. The Beavers await the outcome of the Tennessee-Hawaii game later Saturday evening before learning their seeding and opponent for Sunday's competition.
