RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Oregon State's season-opening winning streak ended at seven games Friday afternoon as the Beavers fell to Sacramento State 10-3 on the second day of the Riverside Baseball Invitational at Riverside Sports Complex. The start matched the eighth-best ever for OSU (7-1 overall) in the school's 95-year varsity baseball history.
OSU concludes the tournament against Washington on Sunday at 11 a.m.; that game can be heard on www.osubeavers.com
Against Sacramento State (10-7), the Beavers allowed at least one run in each of the first five innings to fall behind 8-2. Oregon State also committed four errors in the game, helping the Hornets to five unearned runs.
After Sacramento State scored in the top of the first, OSU evened the game 1-1 on Mike Lissman's home run to leftfield. It gave the freshman outfielder homers on back-to-back days for his first two career home runs.
Oregon State starter Andy Baldwin surrendered a walk and three hits the next inning, though, as the Hornets took a 3-1 lead. Sacramento State tacked on another run on two hits and a walk in the third; OSU managed a run in the bottom of the inning on Jacoby Ellsbury's double and Andy Jenkins' run-scoring single, but the Hornets came back with two unearned runs in the top of the fourth to push their lead to 6-2.
Baldwin had gone 6 2/3 innings in winning each of his first two starts, but against Sacramento State the sophomore righthander went four innings and gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out two.
Trailing 8-2, the Beavers had a shot at getting back in the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mike Hass hit his second double of the game with one out, then scored on Chad Schroeder's two-out single down the rightfield line. Aaron Mathews followed with another single to chase Hornet righthander Warren Rosebrock, and reliever Renecke Strelzriede's two-ball, no-strike pitch to Mike Lissman was driven to the wall in centerfield, but Sacramento State centerfielder Ronnie Machado made a leaping catch to end the inning with the score still 6-3.
Hass finished the day 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Mathews extended his hitting streak to seven games. Ellsbury was 2-for-4 with a double and stole three bases, the third time this season he's stolen three bases in a game; he's 11-for-11 on stolen bases this season.
