SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Oregon State softball team improved to 3-1 after picking up a pair of wins on day two of the Santa Barbara Early Bird Tournament on Saturday. The Beavers shut out Illinois-Chicago 3-0 before defeating UC Santa Barbara 4-3.
"It was nice to go out and play more focused than we did on the first day. Everybody was a little more comfortable today," coach Kirk Walker said. "Our youth showed up a little. We're still learning and growing, but this is an exciting team to watch."
OSU jumped ahead early in the opening contest against UIC, with Mia Longfellow singling and later scoring on Vanessa Iapala's base hit in the first inning. OSU added runs in the third and fourth innings. Monica Hoffman gave up six hits and had 11 strikeouts in the complete game shutout.
In the second game, Lisa Allen hit a three-run home run in the top of the third inning to give the Beavers an early lead over UCSB. OSU added what would be the game-winning run in the fourth inning, when Adrienne Alo drove in Sherina Galvan, who led off the inning with a double.
The Gauchos threatened later, scoring twice in the fifth and once in the sixth, but Hoffman came in on relief to pick up the save. Ta'Tyana McElroy earned the victory.
OSU wraps up the tournament with an 11:30 a.m. contest against Long Beach State on Sunday.
