SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior pitcher Monica Hoffman tossed a 2-hitter as Oregon State's softball team knocked off Long Beach State University, 1-0, in Sunday's final game of the UC Santa Barbara Tournament.
The Beavers finished the opening weekend of action with a 4-1 record, getting revenge against the 49ers after suffering a 5-1 setback on Friday.
"We're glad to come away with a 4-1 record," said 10th year Beaver coach Kirk Walker. "This was a tough level of competition for our opening weekend, but it will pay off for us in the long run."
OSU picked up the only run of the contest in the second inning, when freshman outfielder Natalie Johnson plated sophomore transfer Ingrid Lochelt who had opened the frame with a double.
The Beavers pounded nine hits on the afternoon and defensively were error-free for the first time on the season.
"Offensively we came out very aggressive," said Walker. "Clearly our young players have been maturing and gaining experience over the course of the weekend."
Hoffman improved to 3-0 on the young season and moved into third place on the Oregon State career wins list with 56 all-time victories.
"Monica pitched a phenomenal ballgame," said Walker. "She had a great outing and kept them (LBSU) off balance with all of her pitches."
Oregon State returns to action on Thursday when the Beavers face Brigham Young University in the opening game of the Hawaii Tournament on Oahu. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PST.
