CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gina Schmidt and Joscelyn Hannaford had 20 kills apiece as the Oregon State volleyball team held on to defeat California in five games Saturday night at Gill Coliseum. Game scores were 16-14, 15-10, 14-16, 12-15 and 16-14.
The match, which took 2:55 to complete, was the second five-game contest for both teams in as many nights. The Beavers (7-2, 1-1) played five games against No. 11 Stanford on Friday night, and Cal (4-3, 1-1) also played a five-game match against Oregon that same night.
"This was a great team effort. As the match went on, a couple players really took their game to a new level, Gina Schmidt especially," said coach Nancy Somera.
Schmidt had 20 kills for the second night in a row, and she also added a career-high 27 digs and seven blocks in OSU's win over Cal.
"One of the things we aimed to improve on after last week was our coverage," Somera said. "Tonight, in a match-point situation, we covered a ball, got another swing and eventually got the win. It's those little things that decide matches. It's those little things that we are working extremely hard to do consistently."
In addition to Schmidt's career-high defensive effort, several other Beavers set new career-highs in the match. Hannaford's 20 kills set a new personal best for the sophomore, and she also had a career-high 19 digs. Brandi Bonnarens had a career-high 81 assists, just one shy of tying OSU's single-match assists record. Michele Solomon had career-highs of 17 kills and 10 blocks as well.
OSU also got double-figures from Angie Shirley (15 kills) and K.C. Frederic (11 kills, 17 digs). Shirley also had seven blocks, giving her 401 for her career. She is the sixth Beaver to reach the 400-block milestone.
With OSU's win, the Beavers ended a long streak of five-game losses against Pac-10 competition. The Beavers had lost seven straight five-game matches against Pac-10 teams, with OSU's last five-game conference win coming at Cal in 1997. Overall, the Beavers had lost five straight five-game matches dating back to 1998.
"I don't know when this team last won a five-game match, but this is definitely going to give us the confidence we need," Somera said. "I can guarantee there are going to be more matches like this one."
Cal had five players with double-figure kills, highlighted by Alicia Perry's match-high 27. Perry also led five Golden Bears with double-figure digs. She had 21 for the night.
The Beavers hit .217 for the match, compared with Cal's .173 mark. OSU outdug Cal, 108-101, and won the blocking battle, 21-17. The Bears outkilled the Beavers, 99-97, however. Both teams had 16 service errors.
