EUGENE, Ore. - Angie Shirley had 19 kills, including six in the fifth game, to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Oregon in the Civil War presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers.
The Beavers fought back from a 2-0 deficit to win the final three games. Scores were 12-15, 2-15, 15-11, 15-10, and 15-12. It was the third consecutive five-game match for the Beavers, who are 2-1 in those matches.
"I hope we don't make a habit of these five-game matches, but if we win, we'll take it," said coach Nancy Somera. "But, I didn't expect anything less than this. That's what you're going to get in a rival match. Neither side is going to back down."
OSU improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in Pac-10 play, while the Ducks dropped to 6-4 and 0-3. With the victory, the Beavers equalled their win total from a year ago.
The Beavers found themselves down, 13-6, in game one, but Oregon committed three service errors and a couple hitting errors to allow the Beavers to edge their way back into the game. OSU cut the lead down to two points at 14-12, and the Ducks then missed four game-point opportunities before Gina Schmidt was called for an illegal back-row attack to give UO the 15-12 win.
The Ducks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two and eventually built their lead up to 13-1. The Beavers got a sideout after a kill from KC Frederic, and OSU then scored on an ace by Nikki Neuburger. Oregon finally put it away, scoring its final two points off OSU hitting errors. The Ducks scored five points off aces in that game, including three from Julie Gerlach, who also had two aces in the opening game.
OSU came back strong after the break between games two and three.
"During the break, I challenged them to compete better. We needed to play at a faster pace," said Somera. "I am so proud of this team."
Schmidt got the Beavers back into the match with five kills in game three to help lead OSU to the 15-11 victory. OSU missed its first game-point opportunity when Michele Solomon's serve went out of bounds, but Joscelyn Hannaford's kill gave the Beavers a sideout. Shirley and Lori Daedelow blocked UO's attack to end the game.
OSU broke away from a 7-7 tie in game four to take a 13-8 lead, but after a Hannaford service error, Oregon rattled off two straight points to close within three points. Seven sideouts later, the Beavers got a point off a block from Hannaford and Solomon to prompt Oregon to take a timeout. OSU then won the game on a Duck hitting error.
In the decisive fifth game, the two teams were tied at 8-8 when Shirley slammed down three consecutive kills to give OSU an 11-8 advantage. A kill from Schmidt made it 12-8, and the Beavers built the lead up to 14-10 before the Ducks closed to within two points on an OSU error and a UO kill. Hannaford put the match in the books with a kill.
The Beavers' strong defense continued to keep OSU in the match. OSU finished with 108 digs, tying the season-high set against Cal last week. Jessica Papell had a career-high 23 digs for the Beavers, and Hannaford added 18. Schmidt and Neuburger each had 17, and two others finished in double-figures.
Schmidt had her third straight match with 20 kills, and Solomon and Hannaford added 12 apiece to join Shirley in double-figures.
