CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team came just four points shy of posting the program's first ever win over Stanford after falling to the Cardinal in a marathon match that ended with a 15-11 Cardinal victory in the fifth and decisive game.
OSU opened with 16-14 victories in games one and two before Stanford came back with 15-9 and 15-7 wins in games three and four respectively to force the fifth game. The match took 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete.
It was the first time the Beavers (6-2, 0-1 Pac-10) had gone five games with Stanford since 1986 and the first time since 1993 that OSU had won a game against the Cardinal (7-2, 2-0).
"I feel really good about the way we competed tonight," said coach Nancy Somera. "Stanford made some adjustments that got them rolling, and our passing broke down (late in the match). But our defense went to work and gave us a chance to possibly win that fifth game."
The Beavers hit an impressive .367 as a team in the first game, but their hitting percentage dropped in each game thereafter. OSU hit -.025 in the fourth game and -.059 in the fifth game to finish the night with a .135 mark. The No. 11-ranked Cardinal hit .224 for the match.
"You're not going to beat a team like Stanford if you are hitting negative. You're not going to beat anybody if you hit negative," Somera said.
Katrina Nelson once again came in off the bench to provide a big spark for OSU. The sophomore responded with a career-high 18 kills and tied her career-best with eight digs.
Four other Beavers joined Nelson with double-figure kills. Schmidt had a match-high 20 kills, K.C. Frederic had a career-best 12 kills, Angie Shirley added 11 and Michele Solomon had 10. Stanford's Ashley Ivy had 20 to lead four Cardinals in double-figures. Stanford outkilled the Beavers, 92-80.
The Beavers won the defensive battle, outdigging the Cardinal 92-86. Frederic had a career-best 27 digs, the most by any OSU player so far this season, to give the rookie her first collegiate double-double. Schmidt also had a double-double, adding 16 digs to go along with her 20 kills. Jessica Papell added 11 digs, and Brandi Bonnarens had 10.
OSU also saw strong play at the net, finishing with 12 blocks - highlighted by Solomon's eight total blocks. Stanford had 15 blocks on the night, led by Jennifer Detmer with seven.
Oregon State hosts California at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 16.
