Beavers Sweep Portland State In Volleyball

PORTLAND, Ore. -
Angie Shirley and Gina Schmidt each had 11 kills as the Oregon State volleyball team defeated Portland State 3-0 (15-3, 15-6, 15-9) in the final match of the PSU Conference Challenge on Saturday night.
The Beavers (6-1) hit .392 as a team, with Schmidt hitting .500 for the match. Brandi Bonnarens hit an impressive .875 with seven kills and no errors in eight tries.
Shirley and Schmidt combined for eight kills in the first game to lead the Beavers to 15-3 victory in the opener.
K.C. Frederic served three aces in the second game, including one that put the Beavers up 13-3. A PSU hitting error made it 14-3, but the Beavers couldn't capitalize on their game-point chances. OSU missed on five chances to win the game and the Vikings squeezed in three points of their own in the process. The Beavers got another chance after a PSU service error, and Shirley slammed down a kill to win the game.
Game three started off as a much closer affair, with the Vikings holding an 8-7 lead. The Beavers got a sideout on a PSU service, and then OSU rattled off five straight points for a 12-8 lead. OSU went on to win 15-9, with Shirley closing things off with another kill to end the match.
The Beavers are off until Friday, September 15 when they open Pacific-10 play against Stanford at home in Gill Coliseum at 7:00 p.m.
