LAS CRUCES, N.M. - - Crystal Draper pitched a one-hitter and Shannon Sorg belted a grand slam as No. 12 Oregon State put No. 18 Illinois-Chicago away early, winning 13-1 in women's softball Friday afternoon. The Beavers lead 8-1 after three innings, and were never seriously challenged by the Flames. OSU (9-4-1) will face Texas Tech and New Mexico on Saturday morning before bracket play begins in the afternoon at the Troy Cox Classic.
"It was great to see the team come out with an offensive explosion like that," said OSU head coach Kirk Walker.
Not only did Sorg, a freshman, get her first home run of the year with her grandslam, but freshman Jessica King and senior Tarrah Beyster joined in the action with home runs of their own. King's home run was her first for the year, and Beyster joined OSU first baseman Jenni Jodoin in the team home run lead with two. Jodoin smacked a three-run shot in OSU's come-from-behind win over Penn State earlier Friday.
Sophomore Crystal Draper allowed one run, giving up just one hit on the day. She improved her record to 4-0 on the year with the win, and now has four complete games to her credit.
"Crystal did a nice job of getting ahead of the batters and keeping them off the bases," said Walker.
Beyster went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run, Shawna Feldt doubled and brought in a run while going 2-for-4. Shannon Sorg was 1-for-2 with four RBI from her grand slam. Steph Adams got her team-leading fourth double for the season, as the Beavers totaled 13 hits on the afternoon.
"Overall it was a great team win," said Walker. "They were very focused and intense."
