LAS VEGAS, Nev. - - It took an extra inning for Oregon State to beat Virginia on Sunday, but the Beavers (7-4-1) gritted it out and managed a 2-0 victory in their final game at the UNLV Softball Classic.
With a scoreless tie after seven innings, freshman Cara Maxey was placed on second base in the Beavers' bottom half of the eighth, according to international tiebreaker rules. Maxey took third on Tarrah Beyster's sacrifice, and then scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0. The final run came when Parisa Plant hit into a fielder's choice to second, which scored Shawna Feldt for the final of 2-0.
"It was a good win to end the tournament on," said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. "There was a lot of maturity and growth by the end of the weekend, which will help down the road."
Beyster came on in relief of sophomore pitcher Crystal Draper in the second and pitched the rest of the game, notching seven strikeouts along the way.
"Tarrah did a nice job," said Walker. "Although she allowed runners on, she raised the level of her game when she needed to."
Beyster and Feldt were the only Beavers to tally hits on Sunday, each had a pair of singles.
The win gave OSU a 2-3 record at the tournament, after dropping two games on Friday to Utah and host UNLV before coming back strong on Saturday to beat No. 23 Central Michigan 6-1. OSU dropped its second game Saturday to No. 13 Nebraska 2-1.
Oregon State will be on the road again this weekend, as they travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico for the Troy Cox Classic Feb. 25-27.
