LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Jenni Jodoin's three-run home run helped lift the No. 12 Oregon State softball team to an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Penn State at the Troy Cox Classic on Friday.
The Beavers (8-4-1) were down, 7-0, heading into the top of the sixth inning before Jodoin hit her second home run of the year to help spark a seven-run rally to tie the game.
But, OSU almost missed a chance to even try for the comeback victory. Penn State (3-3) was up 7-0 with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Another PSU run would have ended the game on the eight-run mercy rule, but Tarrah Beyster struck out the next two batters before a fly ball to left field ended the inning.
"It was a good win for us to come from behind like that. We were one run away from being mercied 8-0, so it was good for us to be able to hold the runner at third," said coach Kirk Walker. "After that, we came in and exploded for seven runs to tie the game, so this was a good character building win for us."
After the Nittany Lions went scoreless in the bottom half of the sixth, Traci Feldt led off the top of seventh with a base hit, and Brynnen Guthrie came in as a pinch runner. Guthrie went to second on Cara Maxey's sacrifice bunt and then scored on Shannon Sorg's RBI single.
The Beavers finished the game with 11 hits but committed four errors after going seven consecutive games without an error, although Walker said the weather was a factor in the game.
"It was ugly, windy and cold," he said. "The wind was blowing, the ground was hard, and routine ground balls and fly balls were going for base hits because of the conditions. We did a nice job of bearing down and really focusing the last two innings."
Shawna and Traci Feldt each went 2-for-4, while Sorg was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Shelly Prochaska also added two RBI for OSU.
Beyster improved to 5-4 on the year, while Penn State's Jaci Kalp dropped to 2-2.
OSU continues play at the Troy Cox Classic with a game against No. 18 Illinois-Chicago at 5 p.m. PST on Friday.
