CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State saw 20th-ranked Stanford score a pair of second-half goals as the Beavers fell 2-1 in Pacific-10 women's soccer Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. OSU (7-5-1 overall, 0-2-0 Pacific-10) led or was tied for more than two-thirds of the game against the Cardinal (9-3-0, 2-0-0).
"It was a great all-around performance," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We defended well, we possessed the ball well and threatened to score. It's a plus that our kids come away from this weekend feeling disappointed with being 0-2, but not disappointed in how they performed. We played a good game-and-a-half, except for the second half against California (in Friday's 2-0 loss).
"The exciting thing is that we've got Oregon next weekend. That gets some fire back in them right away, when you tell them it's the Ducks next. We'll be excited to play that game."
The Beavers will play host to Oregon at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Civil War presented by the Northwest Dodge Dealers.
In Sunday's game, Oregon State jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Katie Henderson scored on a penalty kick. It was Henderson's team-high sixth goal of the year, and the freshman is now 5-for-5 on penalty kicks. The penalty was awarded when Henderson and Stanford goalkeeper Carly Smolak became entangled with the ball loose in the Cardinal box, Smolak was whistled for obstructing Henderson from getting back on her feet.
"Katie Henderson continued her strong play," Fennah said. "She's having an outstanding season ... the penalty was a bit controversial, but we felt unfortunate that we didn't get another later on, so it evened out."
The Beavers then led for over 30 minutes, but Stanford tied it at 1-1 in the 58th minute when Kelly Adamson ran onto a loose ball in put a point-blank shot past OSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease.
Stanford finally took its first lead at 2-1 in the 67th minute. Katherine Horney passed the ball inside to Becky Myers, who dribbled to the right at the top of the six-yard box and shot just inside the far post.
Oregon State's best chance at evening the score came in the 79th minute when Jen VanderArend got free for a shot from the top of the box, but it sailed just over the crossbar. OSU was outshot 20-8, but many of the Cardinal's attempts were from outside the box and went well wide or high.
