David Herrick

David Herrick is set to enter his second season as an assistant coach for the Oregon State women’s rowing program in 2020-21 after joining the program on July 31, 2019.
Herrick heads up the Beavers' novice walk-on process, assist with recruiting and help with the overall development of the team.
In Herrick's second year in 2020-21 as assistant coach, he helped Oregon State to its best finish at the Pac-12 Championships since 2009, fourth-place with 21 team points. The Beavers ended the regular season with a win over 16th-ranked Washington State, earning back the Tammy Crawford Plate for winning the varsity-8 race against the Cougars and the Jodi Winchell Cup which goes to the team that scores the most team points in the Oregon State vs. Washington State dual. Herrick assisted in Muryn Greene get named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team.
His initial season at OSU in 2019-20 was expected to bring a high level of rowing for the program, until the season was canceled in mid-March after a single spring race due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Herrick joins the Beavers following three seasons at Virginia, first as a volunteer assistant, and then as the graduate assistant coach. The Cavaliers raced to a 10th-place overall finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships.
Prior to his stint at UVA, Herrick served as a volunteer coach with the Syracuse men’s team. During the summers of 2016-18, Herrick worked as the associate head coach for the Penn AC junior program.
Herrick began his coaching career at Washington State during the 2014-15 season as an assistant, helping guide the Cougars to their best season in five years. WSU captured first in the Lightweight men’s 8+ and 4+, second in the Varsity 8+, and a bronze medal finish in the Second Novice 8+ and Open 2x at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships. At the American Collegiate Rowing Association Championships (ACRA) that spring, the Cougars raced to silver medals in the Lightweight Men’s 4+ and Open 2x, and a fifth-place finish in the Novice 8.
Herrick walked on to the men’s rowing team as a novice freshman at Washington State during the fall of 2010. He earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors in 2013 and 2014, while also serving as a member of the Student Officer Corps.
A Colorado native, Herrick graduated from Washington State in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He completed his Master’s in Exercise Physiology while at Virginia and wrote his thesis on comparing perceived exertion vs. heart rate as training monitors in collegiate female rowers.
