Gregg Gottlieb enters his sixth year with the Oregon State men’s basketball program and his 13th in the Pac-12 Conference. He will serve as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the 2019-20 season.
A veteran of the Pac-12, Gottlieb was an assistant coach for the Beavers the past five years and helped lead the program to three winning seasons and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 26 years.
Gottlieb, who was hired at Oregon State on June 10, 2014, is entering his 25th season at the Division I level.
A native of Southern California, Gottlieb was at the University of California from 2008-14, working under Ben Braun for the first season and Mike Montgomery the final six. The Golden Bears went 147-89 during Gottlieb’s seven years in Berkeley, including five 20-win seasons, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times and the NIT three times.
Cal won the Pac-10 title in 2009 for the first time in 50 years and had three Pac-12 Player of the Year selections in a four-year run.
From 1999-07, Gottlieb was an assistant coach under Steve Fisher at San Diego State and helped lead the team to their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 17 years in 2002. The turnaround began with a winless conference season in 2000 to Fisher becoming the all-time wins leader in Mountain West Conference history.
Gottlieb began his coaching career as an assistant in 1994 at Cal Poly and helped lead one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation as they improved from a one-win program in 1994-95 to a 16-win team in 1995-96.
In 1997, he moved to Sacramento State University where he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for two years.
Gottlieb was a standout basketball player at El Modena High School in Orange, Calif., where he graduated in 1990. He played two seasons at Drake University in Iowa before returning to California to complete his studies at UCLA. Gottlieb earned a bachelor’s degree from UCLA in history with a minor in business in 1995 and his M.B.A. from Cal Poly in 1997.
His late father, Bob, was the head basketball coach at Jacksonville University (1974-75) and the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin (1976-80). He was also an assistant coach for Jack Hartman at Kansas State, Eddie Sutton at Creighton, Tex Winter at Long Beach State and Ralph Miller at Oregon State.
Gottlieb and his wife, Mandy, have a son, Gage, and two daughters, Tess and Quinn.
