Morris, Haight Lead Beavers To Tuesday Win Over UTRGV
April 28, 2026 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Freshman Trey Morris delivered six shutout innings and Oregon State manufactured three unearned runs in an unconventional sixth-inning rally Tuesday night as the No. 6 Beavers held off UTRGV 4-2 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Oregon State (34-9) built its lead without a hit leaving the infield in the decisive frame, instead using speed, an infield error and a passed ball to set up Adam Haight's two-run single. Freshman Ethan Porter added a pinch-hit insurance run in the eighth before closer Albert Roblez finished it off despite two late home runs from the Vaqueros.
Morris, a left-hander, was as efficient as he's been all season. He walked no one, struck out six and induced two double plays in six innings while throwing just 68 pitches. The freshman allowed three hits and improved to 3-0 on the season with a 2.02 ERA.
Oregon State managed baserunners but not much damage against UTRGV starter Robert Bonilla through five innings, going scoreless despite singles from Haight in the second and Jacob Galloway in the fifth.
The Beavers broke through in the sixth. Easton Talt singled up the middle and stole second. Bryson Glassco reached when UTRGV shortstop Diego Villescas bobbled a grounder for an error, and Talt advanced to third on another stolen base. With two outs, a passed ball by catcher Rudy Gonzalez allowed Talt to score, making it 1-0.
UTRGV pulled Bonilla and brought in left-hander JC Gutierrez, but AJ Singer drew a walk and stole second, and Haight greeted the reliever with a line drive single up the middle to score Glassco from third and Singer from second. Haight was thrown out attempting to reach second on the throw, but the Beavers led 3-0. None of the three runs was earned.
Porter — pinch hitting for Bryce Hubbard with two outs in the eighth — extended the lead to 4-1, singling up the middle to score Glassco, who had opened the inning with a two-out double to shallow right. Glassco scored twice on the night.
UTRGV (20-25) made the final innings interesting. Easton Moomau drove a solo shot 337 feet to right off Wyatt Queen in the eighth to make it 4-1, and after Villescas and Hank Warren singled to put runners on, Roblez entered and struck out Rocco Garza Gongora on a dropped third strike to end the threat.
Armani Raygoza launched a solo blast 408 feet to right center in the ninth to trim the deficit to 4-2. Roblez recovered, striking out Moomau and retiring Diego Villescas on a lineout to right to close it out for his 13th save of the season.
Talt, who leads Oregon State with 19 stolen bases on the season, scored the pivotal first run and stole two bases in the sixth alone.
OSU's pitching staff held an opponent to two runs or fewer for the 20th time this season, posting a 3.16 ERA through 43 games.
The Beavers and Vaqueros conclude the two-game midweek series Wednesday night with a 5:35 p.m. PT first pitch at Goss Stadium.
