Fourth-Set Comeback Seals Fifth-Consecutive Win
September 13, 2025 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Staring down a late deficit of 24-23 in the fourth set, the Oregon State volleyball team flipped the script late with a 3-0 run to seal the ASICS Invitational with a 3-1 win (18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 26-24).
The Beavers (5-3) secured their fifth straight of the season and swept the weekend's competition.
Lauren Rumel led the Beaver attack with a double-double behind 18 kills and 10 digs, which were tops in both categories. Two other Beavers – Maëli Cormier (12) and Alana Marrs (10) – rounded off the top-three in kills while Emma Lilo (21) and Jackie Matias (19) helped the offense flow with their combined 40 helpers. Nathalie Scholz put in a team-leading six blocks while Keila Gabriel added five.
The Beavers battled back from a cold first set where the offense managed just a .165 hitting rate as OSU dropped the first by a 25-18 margin. UNLV put the Beavers away with multiple 5-0 runs to draw first blood.
In a relatively foreign spot down a set, the Beavers evened the affair with a five-point win at 25-20 in the second. Despite holding multiple leads – as high as 10 at 15-5 – the Beavers withstood UNLV bringing it close before Hester's kill sealed the five-point set win to level things.
Oregon State took the first lead of the day behind a third set win for the 2-1 lead at 25-18. Going back-and-forth until late, the Beavers used a 6-0 run to pull away from the Rebels with clutch Rumel kills to officially put UNLV on the brink.
Battling through 15 ties and five lead changes, the Beavers secured the match with a gritty 26-24 win in the fourth set. With both sides using runs to grab momentum, neither could fully grab it for longer than a few points. The Rebels pulled even – before going ahead – to pressure Oregon State and take it to five sets. After the final kill by UNLV to give them set point, a block from Gabriel and Marrs turned the tide.
Tied for the 15th – and final – time, consecutive kills from the aforementioned duo sealed the Beavs' fifth consecutive win.
Oregon State will conclude a four-match homestand with the Rivalry Series on Thursday, September 18. Action against Oregon is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
