February 02, 2025 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team closed the weekend with a 25-16 Pac-12 win over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday. The Beavers won six of the 10 matchups, including four by major and one by pin.
In the four major decision wins, the Beavers were relentless on top. Two Beaver wrestlers accumulated over three minutes of riding time, Vaun Halstead (3:42) and No. 33 Ethan Stiles (3:16). Murphy Menke (2:43) and Nash Singleton (2:11) each exceeded two minutes.
In the opening match Hunter Taylor (125) was narrowly defeated by decision, 2-1, before Damion Elliott (133) scored four-points in the third to defeat CSUB's Santino Sanchez. Major decisions from Singleton (141), #33 Stiles (149) and a fall from CJ Hamblin at 157 broke open a 3-all score for Oregon State (2-7, 1-1 Pac-12).
Following the break, Steele Starren lost a hard fought overtime battle with Guillermo Escobedo (165), but was followed up by Menke's first major decision win of the season, 16-4, over Coen Quintana. Menke – wrestling up again from his usual 165 – held a wire-to-wire advantage on his way to a 12 point win as the final buzzer sounded.
The Roadrunners crept closer following a win by fall in the 184-lb. bout to make it 21-12 with just two matches left.
Halstead helped seal the dual win for the Beavers with an 8-0 win by major decision. The victory marked the Pleasant Hill, Oregon product's first collegiate dual win.
Bakersfield didn't go down without a fight as 21st-ranked Jake Andrews won by major decision over Charley Hastriter to make the final dual score 25-16.
With the win, the Beavers extended their winning streak in the Chris Pendleton era over CSU Bakersfield to four.
Oregon State will wrap up the road portion – and Pac-12 competition - of the 2024-25 season this upcoming Friday, February 7 at Cal Poly. The action is slated for a 7 p.m. start from San Luis Obispo and can be seen on the Mustangs' X (formerly Twitter) account.
