Beavers Open Conference Play with Road Win

SAN FRANCISCO – Jenna Villa scored 24 points and Kennedie Shuler added 19 points as Oregon State opened West Coast Conference play with a 74-65 victory over San Francisco on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gymnasium at the Sobrato Center.

Oregon State (9-5, 1-0) shot 47 percent from the floor and knocked down 7-of-14 from three-point range while holding the Dons to 39 percent shooting. The Beavers converted 15-of-19 free throws in the conference opener.

The Beavers seized control in the opening 20 minutes with a dominating second-quarter performance, outscoring San Francisco 22-10 to build a 39-29 halftime advantage. Oregon State shot 71 percent in the second period and limited the Dons to just 30 percent shooting during the decisive stretch.

Villa shot 8-of-16 from the floor and connected on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc while adding six rebounds for the Beavers. Shuler finished an identical 8-of-16 from the field and hauled in five rebounds while dishing out four assists. The duo had 28 points at halftime.

The Beavers wobbled in the third quarter as USF pulled back within one before Ally Schimel contributed all of her nine points and made a trio of three-pointers to steady OSU. The sophomore scored three-quarters of OSU's third-quarter points.

The two teams continued to battle into the fourth before Villa and Shuler regained control for the Beavers with six consecutive free throws. Tiara Bolden added eight points, six at the stripe to put the Dons away. Néné Sow grabbed 10 huge rebounds for Oregon State. She also blocked three shots.

Oregon State shot 50 percent from three-point range and connected on 79 percent from the free-throw line in the victory. The Beavers dished out 15 assists on 26 field goals. OSU held San Francisco (7-5, 0-1) to 27 percent from beyond the arc.
