Beavers Fall to UMass

St. Thomas, Virgin Islands – The Oregon State men's basketball team fell to UMass 73-65 Monday afternoon at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas.
Malcolm Christie led the Beavers with 17 points off the bench, going 4-for-9 from 3-point range and recording three steals. Olavi Suutla played 30 minutes off the Oregon State bench, scoring 12 points and pulling down seven boards. Dez White hit a trio of 3-pointers to end his day with 12 points.
Josiah Lake II filled the stat-sheet, ending his afternoon with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Noah Amenhauser went 3-for-4 from the floor to finish with eight points.
As a team, the Beavers shot 44.9 percent from the floor overall.
The Minutemen scored the first seven points of the game to open up an early lead. Oregon State battled back to take its first lead mid-way through the first half. UMass went back in front by nine with five minutes on the clock, but back-to-back 3-pointers from White helped the Beavers get within two with three minutes to be before the break.
The Minutemen led 34-31 at the intermission. Malcolm Christie paced Oregon State with nine first-half points.
Oregon State used an 8-0 run early in the second half to go in front 48-43. UMass answered with nine-straight points to retake the advantage by a score of 54-50 at the under-12 media timeout. The two sides traded punches from there, with the Beavers carrying a 62-61 edge with six minutes remaining.
The two sides were level at 65 with 2:59 to play, but UMass scored the final eight points of the game to take the win.
The Beavers will return to Gill Coliseum Saturday for a matchup with Cal Baptist.
