Scouting Yale:
The Yale Bulldogs enter Sunday's game with momentum after a 1-0 home victory over St. John's on Wednesday. A ninth-minute goal proved pivotal as the team posted its first clean sheet of the 2024 season, bringing the Bulldogs' record to 1-1 in 2024 after a 5-6-5 campaign in 2023. With two goals scored there have been three players credited with an assist while each of Yale's five shots on goal have come from a different player.
Victory:
Oregon State was victorious the last time out, defeating Idaho State 1-0 on Wednesday. Despite creating several chances throughout the game, the breakthrough came off the boot of Megin Turi in the 85th minute, a long-rage effort from well outside the 18-yard box.
The win was OSU's first of the season and marked the first in Interim Head Coach Caroline Kelly's coaching career, after she had spent the previous eight seasons as an assistant coach – three of which were in Corvallis.
Goals:
Turi started each of the team's final eight games of the 2023 campaign and was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal and helping the Beavers keep a clean sheet against Oregon in the season finale. That late season momentum has translated for the Abbotsford, B.C., native, who scored her third career goal on Wednesday.
With a career total of three goals and two assists, Turi has now scored in two of her last three appearances for the Beavers, dating back to last season.
Creating Chances:
The Beaver offense created several scoring opportunities in Pocatello as the team finished with six shots on goal. Katie Godden had two shots on target, including one in the 81st that forced an acrobatic save from the ISU goalkeeper, as she along with Turi, Martinez and Tobias all finished with at least two shots and one shot on target.
As a team, OSU had six shots on goal in 14 total attempts.
Starting Eleven:
Mere weeks into her collegiate career, Hayden Wilson was given a huge opportunity against Idaho State on Wednesday, as the freshman from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., earned her place in the starting eleven for the first time. Wilson played all 90 minutes in the victory and helped Oregon State shutout the Bengals.
Keep it Clean:
There were many firsts relating to Wednesday's clean sheet. After shutting out seven opponents in 2023, it was the first in the 2024 campaign for OSU, and it was also the first in the career of Mya Sanchez, who tied a career-high with six saves.
Sanchez, now a junior, has made 12 saves and posted a save percentage of 80.0 through her first two career starts, and the 1-0 victory also marked the first victory of Sanchez's collegiate goalkeeping career.
Another Debut:
One of four freshmen to join the Beavers this offseason, Zoe House made her collegiate debut against Idaho State. A former Second Team Colorado 5A All-State selection at Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo., House entered the game in the 38th minute and finished with seven minutes played.
What's Next:
The team's next four matches will be played in the Pacific Northwest. After facing Yale on Sunday, OSU is set to host Nebraska on Sept. 5 before hitting the road to face Seattle U on Sept. 8, then welcoming Fresno State (Sept. 12) and South Dakota State (Sept. 15) to Paul Lorenz Field.
