Beavers Beat Bengals with Late Winner
August 28, 2024 | Women's Soccer
POCATELLO, Idaho – Oregon State women's soccer was in action Wednesday night, defeating the Idaho State Bengals 1-0 at Davis Field.
Hayden Wilson made the first start of her collegiate career as Oregon State looked to have broken the game open early on, but Carly Carraher was called offside after redirecting an OSU header into the back of the net.
Early in the second half, Mya Sanchez made the save of the game with a one-handed stop to her left after ISU found a look near the edge of the 18, keeping the game level at zero.
OSU continued to create chances as the game progressed, and the reward finally came with less than six minutes to go, as Megin Turi unleashed a rocket from well outside the 18-yard box that pushed the Beavers ahead in the 85th minute. Having scored in the season finale last year, Turi now has two goals in her last three appearances as a Beaver.
With just five minutes remaining after Turi's goal, Oregon State's defense stepped up and finished strong, keeping the Bengals out of the net to secure a 1-0 victory.
OSU finished with 14 shots (six on goal) while taking six corner kicks and drawing nine Idaho State fouls. McKenna Martinez led the team in shots with six (two on target) as Sanchez tied a career high with six saves, earning the first clean sheet of her collegiate career.
Wednesday's win also marked the first victory in the head coaching career of Caroline Kelly, who spent the previous eight seasons as an assistant coach – three of which came at OSU.
Oregon State returns to action this Sunday at Paul Lorenz Field. Kickoff against the Yale Bulldogs is slated for 1 p.m.
