On The Pitch
With a combined 12 seniors and graduate students, the 2024 Beaver squad is loaded with experienced talent. McKenna Martinez led the team in points with 15 thanks to six goals and three assists in 1,525 minutes played last season, while Amaya Bautista, the team's leader in game time thanks to 1,676 minutes, is back for another season on the Oregon State back line. Paola Figueroa enters her junior season as one of just five outfield players to have earned over 1,000 minutes of game action last season. Valerie Tobias (graduate student - 927), Mia Erba (sophomore - 920), Megin Turi (junior - 903), Katie Godden (senior - 898) and Carly Carraher (senior - 842) also each played big roles for the Beavers last season.
Fresh Faces
Oregon State welcomed four new faces during the offseason, all of whom are true freshmen in 2024.
Ari Hill comes to the Beavers after playing for Sumner High School (Sumner, Wash.) and Crossfire 06 ECNL. She was the 2022 4A South Puget Sound League Offensive Player of the Year in 2022, after leading the league in goals scored. Hill was a First Team All-State honoree, and was selected as the News Tribune Player of the Year.
Zoe House joins the Beavers out of Highlands Ranch, Colo. Where she attended Valor Christian High School. She was a Second Team Colorado 5A All-State selection, and played her club soccer for Real Colorado 06 ECNL National.
Hailey Martinez was a First Team All-District VHSL and Second Team All-Region VHSL selection at Patriot High School in Gainesville, Va. A finalist for the GA Champions Cup with her club team, she was twice a part of teams that placed third in the Girls Academy Championship.
Hayden Wilson comes to the Beavers from Rancho Cucamonga High School and played club ball for Rebels IE. She was a First Team All-Baseline League selection her junior season, and has also been named Defensive MVP. Wilson's Club was a 2023 US Club Soccer National finalist and a 2023 Surf Cup finalist.
Points
A majority of the Beavers' total point production last season is back in 2024. Led by Martinez's 15, Tobias (six) is joined by Turi (five), Carraher (four), Godden (three), Lindsey Antonson (three), Bautista (one), Erba (one) and Rin Choi (one).
In total, that's 39 of the team's 50 points back in the lineup, or 78%.
Opportunity
After seeing Hailey Coll graduate and join the professional ranks, there is an opportunity between the posts for the team's two goalkeepers, Taylor Hannah and Mya Sanchez.
Hannah is in her sophomore season as a Beaver and did not make an appearance as a freshman. A three-year starter at Chandler High School (Chandler, Ariz.), the 5-7 'keeper stopped 73 shots in high school across some 2,000 minutes played, while also captaining both her high school and club teams.
Sanchez has played 245 minutes across eight appearances in two seasons as a Beaver. A 5-10 shot stopper from Turlock, Calif., Sanchez made a career-high five saves against top-ranked UCLA during her freshman season and played a career-high 76 minutes on the road at California late in the 2023 season.
A New Beginning
Caroline Kelly was elevated to Oregon State's Interim Head Coach on July 9, 2024, bringing with her nearly a decade of coaching experience which includes three seasons as a Beaver.
She previously served as an assistant coach, working with the Beaver goalkeepers and back line while serving as the team's recruiting coordinator. During her time on staff, four Oregon State student-athletes have gone on to join the professional ranks while the defense has excelled, and in 2023 the team posted seven clean sheets - a number that has only been topped once in the previous 10 seasons.
Coach Kelly also had coaching stops at Cincinnati (2020), Army (2018-19), Dartmouth (2017) and South Carolina (2016), all coming after a standout collegiate career where she played goalkeeper for both Virginia Tech and South Carolina.
Role Models
With the coaching change came three new assistant coaches, all of whom bring a plethora of great experience that will benefit the program.
Livv Seddon was most recently on the staff at Iowa State, working with individual student athlete development and statistical analysis with a focus on midfield and attacking play. She got to Ames by way of Kansas State, which came after a five-year playing career at Northern Colorado.
Zandy Soree joins the program after working in the Portland Thorns' academy, where she worked in a variety of roles including as a head coach. She spent two years at Lenoir Rhyne prior to that, and played professionally in the NWSL and Iceland, where she featured in six UEFA Women's Champions League Games. A Belgian international, Soree was capped four times by the senior national team.
Leah Pruitt was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NWSL draft after an incredible college career that saw her finish with 32 goals and 30 appearances across four seasons at San Diego State and USC. She went on to play four seasons in the NWSL, making 50 appearances fro the North Carolina Courage, OL Reign and the Orlando Pride, scoring five goals and adding three assists.
