Oregon State Q&A with Gabe Whisenhunt
August 12, 2024 | Wrestling
Gabe Whisenhunt is a rising redshirt sophomore on the wrestling team. In his time with the Beavers, he's made a name for himself in the classroom and on the mat, as he's been named a scholar All-American and the NCAA's Wrestler of the Week.
Â
Whisenhunt participated in a Q&A with OSUBeavers.com and here's what he said:
Â
Â
Do you remember the first time you stepped on the Oregon State campus and what it meant to you?
GW: I was really young going to work with my mom, saw all the athletes on the walls and dreamed of being up there.
Â
When did you know you wanted to be a student-athlete at the college level? What drew you to it?
GW: Since I was young it was always something I wanted to do
Â
What's one thing you wish more people knew about your sport and what it takes to be competitive?
GW: There is a lot more to it than just what you see at a dual.
Â
If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be and why?
GW: Add push outs on your feet.
Â
What does it mean to you to wear the Orange and Black?
GW: It means everything - family and tradition.
Â
If you could pick any other sport to play, what would it be and why?
GW: I don't know if I would pick another sport, because there isn't anything else that compares to wrestling, but if I had to maybe baseball.
Â
What drives you to succeed?
GW: I want to be the best that I can and achieve my personal goals of being a national champ, but show people that Oregon state is a competitive place to be
Â
What makes you want to be successful off the field? What drives your success in the classroom?
GW: Success in the classroom is important to me because I want to be able to be successful in the business world as well
Â
If you could have dinner with three athletes, dead or alive, who would they be?
GW: Jordan Burroughs, Muhammad Ali, Kobe Bryant
Â
Who did you look up to growing up? What made you look up to them?
GW: I looked up to my dad because he wrestled at Oregon State and was also my coach growing up. I always wanted to continue his footsteps here.
Â
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
GW: Working for my family's business and or starting my own business.
Â
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given? And who gave it to you?
GW: My dad and grandpa always told me that nothing in life is easy or fair and sometimes you just have to suck it up, work hard and you'll reach your goals.
Â
What kind of mark do you want to leave from your time in Corvallis?
Â
GW: I want to put Oregon State back on the map, and show people that you don't need to leave to be the best.
Â
Name your top three things to do in Oregon when you're not playing or studying.
GW: Fishing, camping, going to the lake
Â
What are your favorite topping(s) on a hot dog?
GW: I prefer burgers.
Â
How about ice cream. What do you have to put on it?
GW: Plain, old mint chocolate chip
Â
Your preferred pre-competition meal?
GW: Chicken noodle soup and a good sandwich
Â
What's in your pre-event playlist?
Â
GW: I don't listen to music before matches, but I like country
Â
