Six-Run Seventh Secures Series Win over Sun Devils
March 16, 2024 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. – Down 5-4 going into the seventh, the Oregon State softball team exploded to plate six to stun Arizona State, 10-5, to take the game and the Pac-12 series on Saturday evening.
With one away in the last chance of the night, Lici Campbell sparked the biggest comeback of the season for Oregon State (14-14, 3-2 Pac-12) with a single up the middle that brought Kaylee Oh and Madi Simon home for the 6-5 lead. A batter later, Eliana Gottlieb pushed Campbell to scoring position at third with a single before Grace Messmer's single brought Campbell home.
Reaching safely on a throwing error, Madyson Clark drove in Gottlieb before Kiki Escobar's single brought Messmer home to cap the six-run frame.
The homestanding Sun Devils opened the game's scoring with a solo home run in the second for the game's first lead.
Oregon State answered in the fourth with four – utilizing a pair of two-run homers with an Escobar triple in between – with two out. All four of the fourth-inning scores came from four consecutive at-bats: Messmer walked, Clark homered to left, Escobar tripled and Simon homered to left-center.
Punching back for the game's next four spread across the fourth and sixth, Arizona State threatened to tie the series after taking the lead back at 5-4. In the fourth, the hosts plated a pair on a single before using back-to-back homers within the first three pitches of the sixth.
Tossing 2.0+ innings in relief – entering after the second batter in the sixth – Sarah Haendiges picked up her second win of the weekend. The junior allowed just two hits and struck out the side to preserve the 10-5 result. Ellie Garcia – the game's starter – allowed all five runs on seven hits and a walk but did record a strikeout after 5.0+ frames of action.
Clark and Messmer paced the Oregon State offense, each registering a pair of hits in the contest. Seven other Beavs added a hit in the nine-hit team total.
With the win, Oregon State secured their first series win of the year and second consecutive and now third of the last four over the Sun Devils.
The series finale is set tomorrow with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch from Farrington Stadium and can be seen on the ASU Live Stream.
