Comeback Attempt Thwarted in Series Finale
March 17, 2024 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State used five runs spread through the fifth and sixth innings to take the series finale from Oregon State, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon.
While the Beavers (14-15, 3-3 Pac-12) took the first two games of the series, the offense couldn't match the output of the previous two days, only generating five hits.
The Sun Devils plated their first two on a two-out double to break open the then-scoreless game before they tacked on the final three on a home run to left. Attempting a second consecutive seventh-inning comeback, the Beavers could only muster a run when Grace Messmer crossed home off Madison Simon's sacrifice fly. The game concluded with Madyson Clark stranded just 60 feet away at third.
Five Beavers – Lici Campbell, Madyson Clark, Abby Doerr, Paige Doerr and Messmer – each got a hit on the afternoon.
Logan Hulon (3-7) got tagged with the loss as she gave up the five runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. The Texan also retired two by strikeout.
Oregon State will close out the four-game road trip with a nonconference matinee in Phoenix at Grand Canyon. First pitch against the Lopes is slated for 2 p.m. PT and can be seen on ESPN+.
