Beaver Gym Hosts Arizona State on Friday
February 28, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics
Friday’s meet, slated to begin at 7 p.m., is the 34th meeting in the two programs’ history.
Matching Up: Oregon State enters this week's meet with some momentum, posting back-to-back 197s in wins over Stanford and Arizona, which also included a clean sweep of the event titles against the Wildcats on Sunday. OSU has dominated ASU in the all-time series, with 26 team wins and seven losses, while also winning nine of 11 matchups at Gill Coliseum. The last time these teams met in Corvallis, Jade Carey was given a perfect 10 on the bars on her way to a 39.825 all-around score in a 197.375-196.550 Beaver victory.
Arizona State enters Friday's meet one spot behind the Beavers in Road to Nationals' rankings, coming in at No. 18 after its third-consecutive victory, downing the Washington Huskies 196.825-196.500 in Tempe. The Sun Devils, led by a 12th-ranked beam lineup, also took down then-ranked No. 17 Arizona (196.850-196.250) and Stanford (196.975-196.875) as part of the streak.
Dominance: Carey's dominance has extended well beyond the aforementioned meet against Arizona State, with the Phoenix, Ariz., native finding her groove in the last two weeks. Across two matchups against Stanford and Arizona, Carey has won eight of 10 possible event titles thanks to back-to-back four title performances, pushing her season total up to 11 despite competing in the all-around just three times.
The program record of 116 career event titles, held by Chari Knight, remains within striking distance, as Carey now sits at 105 with three meets remaining in the regular season.
Hometown Hero: Performing some 100 miles from her hometown of Gilbert, Ariz., Natalie Briones set a new career-high in her second event of Sunday's meet, earning a 9.875 for her vault that surpassed a previous career-high of 9.85 set earlier this season. Having posted a 9.85 on the uneven bars and 9.825 on FX, Briones maintained her perfect hit percentage, as she's 21-21 this season.
Out of the Gate: A big part of the Beaver win on Sunday was how the team came out rolling on the bars. With a 49.525 rotation score, it marked the highest rotation score by either team, and saw all five counted scores finish above a 9.85: Carey led the way with a 9.975 and was joined above 9.9 by Sage Thompson and Jennifer McMillan, who both posted 9.925s. Briones and Taylor DeVries both finished with a 9.85.
19.825: McMillan's 9.925 bars routine marked her third 9.9 or better in the 2024 campaign but second in as many weeks after earning a 9.9 on the bars against Stanford last week. Currently in her second year as a Beaver, the Charlotte, N.C., native has appeared on the bars and beam in every meet this season with one exhibition appearance on FX, averaging a 9.856 on UB and 9.789 on BB.
Jack of All Trades: Along with Carey, there are two other Beaver gymnasts to compete in the all-around this season: Sage Thompson and Sophia Esposito. Thompson, in her first season at OSU, posted a 39.275 in her first ever all-around against Stanford last week before earning a 9.925 on bars during another AA appearance against Arizona. Esposito tied for second in the event title race down in Tucson, finishing with a 39.375 after winning the vault event title with a 9.9.

Injury Updates: Ellie Weaver and Sydney Gonzales both sustained injuries that will keep them out for the remainder of the 2024 season. Lauren Letzsch still remains out indefinitely.
