Floor Exercise Fuels Beaver Victory over ASU

OSU out-scored Arizona State in every rotation as several gymnasts set new career highs.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 17th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics program was in action Friday night, defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils 197.400-196.625 at Gill Coliseum. The win marked the team's third-consecutive 197 or higher and third-consecutive victory, with several Beaver gymnasts setting new career-best marks.
Coming off one of her best performances of the year in Tucson, Natalie Briones kicked things off with yet another 9.8-plus score on the vault, earning her seventh 9.8 or better on the season with a 9.825. Sage Thompson followed with a 9.775 before Kaitlin Garcia tied a career-high with a 9.85, which was her sixth 9.8 or better in 2024. Sophia Esposito was given a 9.750 before Jade Carey posted a perfect 9.95 to set a new season-high mark on vault.
Entering Friday's meet ranked No. 6 in the country, OSU's bars lineup once again proved why its among the nation's elite, posting a 49.475 team score that was punctuated by Taylor DeVries earning a career-best 9.95 in the three spot. Carey followed suit with a 9.925 while Thompson and Sophia Esposito were both given 9.875s, with Esposito's score setting a new career high. Briones and Jennifer McMillan were both given a 9.85 for their routines, providing the Beavers with some momentum heading into the balance beam.
In the meet's third rotation, OSU was led off by an Esposito 9.825 and Thompson 9.775. McMillan got things rolling in the middle part of the lineup, finishing with her second 9.875 or higher in the last three weeks after earning a 9.9 against Stanford two weeks ago. Ariana Young would steal the show, however, sticking the landing on a beautiful routine that culminated in a season high – and career-high-tying – 9.9, with Carey posting a 9.875 to round out the rotation.
Oregon State saved the best for last, posting a meet-high 49.525 rotation score on the floor that saw each of the five Beaver scores come in at 9.85 or greater. Karlie Chavez, making her second floor appearance of the season, was given a 9.85 while Young earned her fifth 9.85 or better this year thanks to a 9.875. Thompson set a new career high with a 9.9 on her routine while Esposito rounded out her all-around performance with a 9.925.
Much like she has throughout her career, Carey wowed the judges in the meet's final routine, earning a 9.975 that wrapped up a quality Beaver performance. When all was added up, Oregon State held a 197.400-196.625 advantage.
For the second-straight week, OSU swept the event titles - three of which were courtesy of Carey - who moved within single digits of the program record; now at 108, Chari Knight's program record is 116. DeVries' 9.95 on bars marked the second of her career after winning the bars title against Brown on Jan. 21, while Young's beam routine culminated in her third of the season after winning event titles at the January Quad (beam) and against Brown (floor).
Oregon State gymnastics returns to action next Friday, hosting Washington in the final home meet of the 2024 season. The action commences at 7 p.m. with a ceremony to recognize OSU's seniors set to take place after the meet's conclusion.
