CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team dropped their Thursday night home match to Santa Clara, in three sets.
Holding the Beavers (4-10, 1-3 WCC) to a hitting percentage of just .165, the Broncos secured the win with set wins of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18 inside Gill Coliseum.
Oregon State's offense was led by nine kills from Lauren Rumel and 20 assists from Emma Lilo, while Kalli Schoening added six kills on the night. Defensively, Yasemin Narlioglu dug out 13 balls to keep the Bronco attack in check. Iris Coba and Vivian Light led the squad in service aces, each tallying one.
Aided with an efficient .366 clip, the Broncos coupled that with multiple scoring runs on the way to the nine-point win in the first frame. Taking the lead from the jump, Santa Clara a 3-0 run to open the action before Schoening's first kill got the Beavers on the board. Oregon State trailed by as many as 11 in the late stages of the set before using a late 3-0 run that proved to be not enough.
Despite jumping to an 8-6 lead to open the second set, Oregon State couldn't withstand a 7-0 Bronco run to turn the set's tide on their way to dropping the frame. Santa Clara held the Beavers to a .133 hitting mark while tallying a .382 clip for themselves. Four Beavers – Annika Hester, Rumel, Schoening and Zaria Thornton – all tallied two kills while Lilo dished eight assists.
A second consecutive set with a sub-.140 (.139) hitting percentage hindered Oregon State in the final frame, securing a loss at 25-18. Santa Clara capitalized on the Beavers' struggles as they used sizable scoring runs to put the hosts on the edge, including taking the lead at 6-1 to open the third. Oregon State, eager to extend the match, brought their deficit to as low as four before Santa Clara stretched it back on the way to the win.
The Beavers will wrap the weekend with a contest on Saturday, the 12th, against San Francisco. First serve against the Dons is set for noon and can be seen on ESPN+.
